Delegation is one of the most important time management principles available to managers. I can't think of a management practice that is praised more in theory but applied less in practice. When I ask managers about delegation, they praise its merits, but when it comes to their own use of delegation, the common response is "It is useful, BUT in my case...."

In doing your own business, many factors should be considered. You should consider the time, money, people and other resources that you have invested.

Delegation is an important but underutilized time management tool. If you find that by the end of the day that you still haven't got through half of you to-do list, then delegation could be beneficial for you and your workforce. Rreverse delegation does not always mean an attempt by your team members to shirk their responsibilities. Oftentimes, they don't realize they're doing it.

When you think it's appropriate, go ahead and take some of their responsibilities. But be keen and alert to notice the possibility of reverse delegation (also known as "upward delegation"), especially if you feel you are becoming overloaded with other people's work.

Delegation dysfunction plagues most small businesses. Here's how it works: You give something to someone else to do. They put it on the bottom of their pile. You check on it and discover that it's not done. You press them on it, and it finally gets done. But it's not done right and you end up doing it yourself. That is the definition of dysfunction! A real nightmare, NOT the dream you had when you started your own business.

Less successful managers often refuse to delegate for fear of failure by their people, no time to train their people, or a lack of experienced staff. This article shows how successful managers quickly develop the initiative within their people to become real problem solvers and take action.

Getting work done through others is the fastest way to increase productivity. However, many struggle with the ‘how’. One of the biggest complaints you’ll probably hear when people talk about their staff is ‘it’s quicker to do it myself’. And that’s true. However, if we don’t work out how to get past that stage we’ll be doing ‘it’ until we’re old and wrinkly.

Good delegation is a major challenge for most people: poor delegation is a major time waster. It doesn't come naturally - we have to learn it, just as good leadership doesn't come naturally to most of us. We grow up with a bias to action, and to be good delegators we have to learn to step back and help others do the work we used to do.

Not sure what you can delegate? Don't know if you can afford it? Try writing down a list of all the regular tasks you do in a week, and estimate the amount of time spent on each activity. Now, pretend you're paying someone a wage relative to each task, and put a dollar value beside each item, based on the guestimated hours spent. For example, bookkeeping might be worth $35 per hour. If you've spent 2 hours this week doing the books you'd put $70 beside that one. If, on the other hand, you've done data entry, that may be worth $15 per hour. You've taken 30 minutes, so $7.50 goes in the column.
