You can't be really alive and not have had some kind of trauma in your life of some sort. It really doesn't have to be on a massive scale either to be effecting you. In fact you may not even know that it's even there. If you are like me and I think there's a lot of you out there, then I grew up with an attitude that if I got angry, or sad, or frustrated, well then I wasn't really supposed to express those emotions, so I just stuffed them in. Then when some more emotions that came up about the emotions that I just stuffed, I would stuff that stuff down there too.

The common image for trauma and traumatic experiences usually encompasses the negative extremes of life. Rape, childhood abuse, war, mass destruction, and natural disasters are all seen as the causes of trauma. They are valid causes, to be sure, but they are not the only reasons. Certainly, they are the ones that have cast the greatest shadow over the collective popular consciousness, with things like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) becoming more and more common knowledge.

Some authorities say that up to 60 percent of psychiatric patients, both in-patient and out-patient, report childhood histories of physical or sexual abuse or both. This estimate excludes emotional abuse and neglect.
