Bacteria and other microorganisms cause food poisoning. There is no way to prevent food poisoning after ingestion of contaminated food. The key is to avoid eating such foods. The best food poisoning treatment is to let it run its course. The body has two ways to get rid of contaminated food: diarrhea and vomiting. Vomiting does not prevent food poisoning. But once the body is void of the contaminated food, the food poisoning will be over. Another aspect of food poisoning treatment is to prevent dehydration. Loss of fluids is serious in food poisoning.

How to treat food poisoning at home... Food poisoning comes from eating foods that contain germs like bad bacteria or toxins, which are poisonous substances. Bacteria are all around us, so mild cases of food poisoning are common. You may have had mild food poisoning - with diarrhea and an upset stomach - but your mom or dad just called it a stomach bug or stomach virus. Keeping food safe is the first step to better health. Food borne illnesses will occur when food safety measures are not taken. Hygiene is an important factor in food safety.

Food poisoning may be defined as a food borne gastrointestinal disorder. It occurs when one consumes stale or contaminated food. In certain cases of food poisoning, the kidney, muscle and even brain are affected. Vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea are the major symptoms of food poisoning. For some, it can also cause itching, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, numbness, tingling sensation, headache, body ache, fever, unconsciousness, hallucinations and difficulty in swallowing.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that there are approximately over 70 million incidences each year in the United States, with many of these cases going unreported because the individual affected was not aware that it was indeed caused by ineffective compliance to food safety rules. Symptoms of food poisoning include uncontrollable vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, and severe exhaustion. If you think you may have eaten contaminated food at a restaurant or any other establishment which serves food, you may be able to file a lawsuit and receive monies if you win the case against the negligent party.

Food poisoning is caused by eating organisms or toxins present in food or drinks. Staphylococcus or E. coli is one of the commonest bacteria which results in food poisoning. Food poisoning is a common, usually mild, but sometimes deadly illness. Typical symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, and diarrhea that occur suddenly (within 48 hours) after consuming a contaminated food or drink. Depending on the contaminant, fever and chills, bloody stools, dehydration, and nervous system damage may follow.

In most cases of foodborne illness (food poisoning), symptoms resemble intestinal flu and last a few hours to several days. But in cases of botulism, or when food poisoning strikes infants, the ill, the elderly, or those with compromised immune systems, life-threatening complications can result. Microscopic organisms that cause foodborne illness are everywhere-in the air, soil, water, and in human and animal digestive tracts. Most are capable of growing undetected in food because they do not produce an "off" odor, color, or texture. The only way these microbes can be prevented from causing human illness is by handling and storing food safely.
