Gene therapy is the insertion of genes into an individual's cells and tissues to treat a disease, and hereditary diseases in which a defective mutant allele is replaced with a functional one. Although the technology is still in its infancy, it has been used with some success. Antisense therapy is not strictly a form of gene therapy, but is a genetically-mediated therapy and is often considered together with other methods.

It is common knowledge that heart failure follows another severe form of heart damage; however, until now scientists and doctors have had no way to identify those at risk. New research into genes and gene therapy have made them a potential weapon in the fight against heart failure.

Humans will always be battling the threat of viruses. Scientists, however, have also found ways to use these viruses to treat diseases that were once uncurable. By properly controlling some viruses, they can be used in certain therapies to deliver special genes directly to a specific organ thereby curing the disease.

Gene Therapy is the use of genes to treat human disease. Despite a few initial setbacks recent advances in gene therapy has brought hope to the sufferers of inherited diseases. In this article we introduce the basic concept of gene therapy.

Most of the inherited cases of breast cancer have been linked with the two genes Breast Cancer gene 1 (BRCA1) and Breast Cancer gene 2 (BRCA2). These two genes play a role in keeping the breast cells growing normally and preventing any cancerous cell growth. However, abnormal BRCA 1 and BRCA2 gene increase an individual's risk from breast cancer. These genes usually account for almost up to 10 percent of all breast cancers.
