Greying hair, like wrinkled skin, is a manifestation of the ageing process. The main cause of the greying hair is the genetic inheritance. When hair starts greying permaturely, it can cause a great deal of anxiety and hopelessness. But in half of all Caucasoid people, half the hairs on the scalp are grey by the age of 50. However, as a person grows older and reaches middle age, more and more of these pigment cells die and colour is lost from individual hairs.

In one recent study, conducted in the US, people using lead acetate-containing grey hair colorant were monitored but no absorption of lead into their blood stream was registered. Hence, it was determined that lead acetate-based hair dyes can remain in use but the concentration of lead acetate may not exceed 0.6 per cent.
