Hiring a contractor for a plastering job is as age old as the Great Sphinx itself! In the same age range as tile, brick, and cement, plaster is also one of oldest building materials and even ancient Egyptians incorporated plaster into their buildings and pyramid artwork. The plastering work of ancient Egyptians survived for over four thousand years - so you can just imagine how long it will last for you!

When we typically hear of plaster, we think of a white or off-white smooth surfacing material. Decorative plaster on the other hand is something quite different. No - it isn't some wild sculptural configuration like you might have seen in art history books. Today's decorative plaster is much more subtle than that, yet more visually stimulating at the same time.

In the recent past, many American homes contained walls that were made of gypsum plaster - a combination of powder and water applied over a wire mesh. This process was rather lengthy and in an effort to meet the demands of a growing population and need for faster building, drywall was invented.

Drywall, wallboard or gypsum are just a few of the many names this common building material is referred to. The big question surrounding this material is the reason why there is a need for it to be diverted from the landfill.

Many a gardener have been confused about the role of gypsum in gardening. It is a soil additive for micronutrients, conditioner, amendement and fertilizer.

Drywall (also called wallboard, gypsum board, and plasterboard) is an economical building material usually used to face walls and ceiling inside structures. Composed primarily of gypsum rock stretched out in a flat sheet between two pieces of thin board (or heavy paper, as some say), drywall is low-budget and easy to install-two reasons why it's the most commonly used interior building material throughout the world!

Whether those walls are in a single room, a small guesthouse or even an entire home, walls that look fresh and new have a peculiar way of introducing a brand new ambience. This home improvement decision is preferable to living with walls that are worn from age, wear, and tear.

We have all probably used drywall at one time or another in our lives and we know what it takes to finish the stuff even if we have never touched. We know that it goes on all inside walls and that it won't hold heavier hangings like shelves and large pictures and so we need to find the studs beneath. We may have also had experience repairing a hole that was intentionally or unintentionally placed in a wall.

Faux (pronounced Fo) finishing is a technique that uses paint to simulate various finishes, such as textured stone, lime washing, linen weave, crackle paste, distressed leather and more. Attractive it may be, but durable it is not. In fact, one paint manufacturer actually states in their brochure that the finished faux surface must be protected by painting with the color of your choice. Beyond that, damaged areas are virtually impossible to patch invisibly. Now, there's nothing wrong with using a faux finish.
