There are many reasons why H.I.D. (High Intensity Discharge) lights work better than normal halogen headlights. The first thing you should remember is that H.I.D. lights work better because they are much brighter compared to halogen lights. The average lumen (the amount of brightness that comes from a light source) of an H.I.D. light is about 3000 lumens. The reason for this is that H.I.D. headlights work longer than halogen lights because they don't include filaments and halogen gases to emit light.

Halogen lights and bulbs are types of the incandescent light technology. These lights and bulbs function by letting electricity pass through a filament or thin wire of tungsten enclosed by a tube of glass filled with halogen gas. The halogen gas serves as the catalyst for chemical reaction. The reaction causes the tungsten to be removed from the glass wall and deposited back to the filament. This is the cause of the bulbs' long life.

When you go to automobile conventions, you'll hear vague mumblings about H.I.D. Conversion kits as fast as car racers drive. H.I.D. headlights are really safer than the regular halogen lights that all people are familiar with. Let's view some facts: First, H.I.D. lights work better because they are much brighter compared to halogen lights. The average lumen (the amount of brightness that comes from a light source) of an H.I.D. light is about 3000 lumens. Compare this with a typical halogen light which is 1400 lumens, and you’ll see the point.
