The first urban civilization in ancient Indian history starts with the birth of the Indus Valley Civilization which originated in the north-western part of the Indian subcontinent. Two major centres of this civilization were Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa. This Bronze Age soon gave way to the Iron Age Vedic period and gave rise to one of the major kingdoms known as the Mahajanapadas. It was this Age that saw the birth of Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism. The subcontinent saw many successful kingdoms and empires having a thriving and flourishing trade throughout the land.
