The basil is a herbaceous annual culture plant, ramified from the ground, 20-60 cm tall with hairy stems, round-oval leaves and white or reddish flowers. The basil has been known since ancient times and is a holy plant in India, very much appreciated by Egyptians, too; bouquets of basil were found in the Egyptian pyramids.

Holy basil is a common name of a world-renowned herb Tulasi. It is a secret herb that has a mythological back ground. Tulasi is supposed to be a beloved of Lord Krishna, a reincarnation of Lord Vishnu, the operator of this world. Hence the herb got its name from there.

Holy basil or Tulsi is a mark of holiness or piousness in Hindu society. Tulsi literally means a thing that can't be compared with anyone. It is a plant that grows thorough out India and is worshiped throughout.

Basil is my favorite of all the herbs because it is so versatile and easy to grow. Those of you who follow my recipes site will know that I like to grow my own herbs and as basil is normally ready to eat just 6-weeks after planting I naturally use it often.

A great plant to grow in your herb garden is basil. A beautiful species, ‘Dark Opal' basil lends both flavor and color to culinary creations. No other herb is so exuberant and bountiful as basil. When you would pick from your herb garden, a few fronds of parsley and dill, or a sprig of rosemary and thyme, you would pick an armload of basil. And it is a good thing because you will find this herb to be extremely useful!
