The cornea is a part of the eye that helps focus light to create an image on the retina. It works in much the same way that the lens of a camera focuses light to create an image on film. The bending and focusing of light is also known as refraction. Usually the shape of the cornea and the eye are not perfect and the image on the retina is out-of-focus (blurred) or distorted. These imperfections in the focusing power of the eye are called refractive errors. There are three primary types of refractive errors: myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Persons with myopia, or nearsightedness, have more difficulty seeing distant objects as clearly as near objects.

Lasik eye surgery is laser guided surgery which is computer controlled for obtaining high precision. The surgery is done to adjust the refractive disorders of the cornea. It is used for near sightedness, hyperopia and other refractive disorders. The operation is painless and quick. However, to undergo this surgery the person should have attained 18 years of age. Moreover, there must not have been any change in the eyesight for a steady period of one year.

Laser vision correction is a procedure used to correct common eyesight problems such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and corneal irregularities (astigmatism). To understand more about laser vision correction, this article discusses the types of eyesight deficiencies and how these can be corrected using these new techniques.

The FDA first approved the excimer laser for eye correction in October of 1995. Lasik was approved in 1998.

Lasik is a new type of laser eye surgery performed by ophthalmologists for correcting myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Lasik is the full form for laser assisted in situ keratomileusis. This new Lasik vision imparts a corrective vision to the patients with his full recovery and less pain!! Microkeratome, an instrument in Lasik eye surgery is used to make a flat circular flap around the most delicate part of the eye that is cornea. But to make it simpler eye surgeons have a newer way of making the flap with the lasers. Excimer, one of the lasik lasers is produced to perform Lasik operations.
