In the end though, he was right. We cut our consumption in half again - for next to nothing. Talk about savings!

The use of electricity for supplying heat for cooking is very popular in some homes, especially those which are properly wired, because of its convenience and cleanliness and the fact that the heat it produces can be applied direct. The first electrical cooking apparatus was introduced at the time of the World's Fair in Chicago, in 1892, and since that time rapid advancement has been made in the production of suitable apparatus for cooking electrically.

In this article I'll cover meters and monitors, which help you understand where your energy use is going; and indirect energy saving devices - devices made for another purpose that indirectly save you energy. I don't cover direct energy saving devices such as programmable thermostats, or gimmicks such as the device you connect to your power line that claims (unjustifiably, as far as I can tell) to cut your electricity costs by 20 per cent or more.

The technology for flow measuring has changed radically in the last ten years. Before then it was necessary to actually open a pipe and put in a tool in order to measure the flow. Now you can attach a couple of transducers and get an accurate measurement of the gas or liquid flowing inside. A portable flow meter will allow you to measure different areas in a pipe as well as only have one unit to measure multiple locations. The technology that makes this possible is called transit time.
