Although, the names of two most popular and economically significant cities in Japan, Kyoto and Tokyo, are composed of the same letters, the similarity in these two cities pretty much ends there. The relation between these two cities can be explained as two twins separated at birth, who have grown into two dramatically different people with completely different identities.

The town of Gion in Kyoto has long been revered as the city's geisha district. As travelers on a sightseeing tour of Japan stroll across the cobble-stoned roads and encounter traditional teahouses, they hope to come across beautiful Japanese women donned in colorful silk kimonos and traditional makeup.

This seems to be mentioned in the papers almost every day recently. When you buy a holiday or even car insurance, carbon offsetting is available. What exactly is carbon offsetting and why do we need it?

Last week during his tour of Kyoto Japan, President Bush visited the Golden Pavilion (Kinkakuji) and described it as "magnificent". He was probably referring to the 1398 Japanese architecture but may just as well have been referring to gold prices which are at an 18-year high. Gold has been a magnificent investment and still has considerable upside.

The first cultured freshwater pearls originated in Japan. Although the Chinese were the first to culture a product from freshwater mussels, these were not pearls. Their centuries-old Buddhas are not true pearls but shell mabes. Quite soon after their initial success with cultured saltwater pearls, pearls producers in Japan experimented with fresh water mussels and produced beautiful pearls. Japanese pearl farmers experimented with freshwater mussels in Lake Biwa, a large lake near Kyoto. Initial commercial freshwater pearl crops appeared in the 1930s.

When it comes to geothermal energy, Australia may not hold the top spot in the utilization of this renewable energy, but the potential is certainly there. As it has with other renewables, Australia has turned its attention to geothermal energy as a means to reach certain energy generation goals by the end of the year. These goals somewhat mirror the guidelines set by the Kyoto Protocol.

As numerous countries around the world look to alternative energies for electricity and other power generation, Australia has taken the lead in wave power. Renewable energy that powers homes and provides drinking water only makes sense in a country surrounded by ocean.

In a land as sun-drenched as Australia, solar energy utilization naturally springs to mind. The amount of renewable energy generated by the numerous sunny days found in the nation is considerable, right? Sort of. The potential is certainly there, but Australia is actually making use of solar energy at a relatively lower clip than other countries. Power produced from solar energy is called photovoltaic (PV) power, and as of last summer, Australia had approximately 115 MW of installed PV power. This contributes only 0.1 per cent to 0.2 per cent of Australia's total electricity generation.
