Limoges is a city and commune in France. St Martial, who came to the city around 250, evangelized the city. The Abbey of St Martial was constructed in the 9th century, and was the home of a large library. The presence of this library led to Limoges becoming a flourishing artistic center during the middle ages. Limoges was also the home of an important school of music composition, the St Martial School.

Before we look at trinket boxes, let us take a look at the basic box. Any receptacle with a lid could be defined as a box. The original boxes were probably rectangular wooden receptacles used to store grains. The box has come a long way since then.

Limoges boxes are also porcelain figurines shaped into the form of some animal, bird or object. Alternatively, the figurine might be mounted on a conventionally shaped box. The boxes are hand painted, and signed by the artist or factory, and are adorned with a decorative clasp.

A Limoge box is a porcelain jewelry or trinket box shaped into one of an innumerable variety of forms. There are boxes shaped like bears, birds, fishes, frogs, bugs (particularly the famed Ladybug), butterflies, cats, dogs, horses and even monkeys. Then there are shapes from the Zodiac, Children's stories, Nativity, Nature, Monuments, Beaches, New York and the Orient, among numerous other themes.

The practice of giving Christmas gifts follow a long established social practice of exchanging gifts to indicate love, friendship and other sentiments of a positive nature. You might reward children for their good behavior, cement social relationships, or just wish to make the gift recipient happy.

Gifts are intended to make the recipient of the gift happy (or at least, less sad than before). Hence the gift idea should be something that would please the recipient and that is in line with the person's hobbies and interests. Your own preferences should be only secondary.

Fishing is both big business and a sport enjoyed by millions of people. Fishing started over 40,000 years ago but at that time it was for food rather than sport. The Egyptians were one of the first to use fishing tools to catch fish. The river Nile was an obvious source of fish for them. Fish were caught in all sorts of different ways using our hands or weapons such as spears until more sophisticated ways of fishing were tried. These include nets and traps.
