Before we look at what a load cell amplifier is let's see what exactly a load cell is. A load cell is an electronic device that converts force into an electrical signal which can then be measured. In simplistic terms it is a device that allows us to weigh items and loads - measuring the force gives us the weight. So where does the amplifier come into it? The electrical output through a load cell is usually a few millivolts which isn't that much and requires the output to be put through an amplifier before the output can be used.
There is a large array of load cells that are available today, all have different specifications and are more suited to certain jobs than others. So how do you know which load cell to use for which application? Here is a look at some of the different load cells that are obtainable, a short description, and which usage they are more appropriate for.
Before we begin looking at individual compression load cells lets first describe exactly what a compression load cell is and what it is used for. A load cell is an electronic device that is used to convert force into an electrical signal. What does this mean? It means the force of an object can be converted into a signal by the load cell in order for it to be measured in other words a weighing device. Load cells are used in many weighing applications such as electronic crane scales, finding the center of gravity of an object by weight, force measurement, force gauge, tank and vessel weighing, railcar weighing, structural health monitoring, tension measurement, and truck weighing.
By definition a load cell is an electronic device (a transducer) that is used to convert a force into an electrical signal. What does this mean? A load cell is a transducer which converts force into a measurable electrical output. How does this work? The conversion of the force into an electrical current is indirect and happens in two phases. A load cell can consist of one, two or four strain gauges depending on the type of load cell, and it is the strain gauge that converts the force into the electrical current. Now not all load cells use strain gauges, there are many different types such as hydraulic, pneumatic load cells, fibre optic, button and washer load cells to name a few.
A load cell converts force into a measurable output, meaning a load cell allows us to weigh items accurately. Strain gauge based load cells are probably the most popular form but there are many different types such as Hydraulic Load Cells, Pneumatic Load Cells, and Fiber Optic, and many more. But where did it all begin, how did the load cell come about and who invented the theory behind it all?
