Most American cases of malaria develop in travelers who have recently returned from parts of the world where malaria is widespread.

Malaria is the name given to a mosquito borne infectious disease afflicting humans. The disease is widespread in the tropical and subtropical regions where the culprit Anopheles mosquitoes thrive. The root-cause of malaria is the parasite plasmodium that is transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes. The main species of mosquitoes transmitting malaria are Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium knowlesi, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium malariae and Plasmodium ovale. Of the above types, the first two are deadly while the rest three are not that serious. The parasite, after entering human body, multiplies in the liver and later infects red blood cells.
