A lot of martial artists are disparaging of anything they don't learn in a dojo, and perhaps with some justification. However, after I beat the crap out of my feet doing dumb things learning about footwear (see my article on footwear for more. I do stupid things so you don't have to. Or, at least, thats what I tell myself), I needed some time doing something else. Now, doing something else doesn't mean I skip learning about Martial Arts. It is the pacifist nature of Omoto-kyo that is said to be the fundamental principle of this "art of peace" martial art form. Anyone who has the stones to enter a sparring match without a cup on, wont be standing for for long. Theres protective equipment like the well-padded foot gloves that I wear when Im coaching, so I dont do a spin kick and accidentally take someones head off if they miss a block. Additionally, the early era, when rules were much less strict, was seen as spectacle instead of sport. This has completely turned around.
