Vitiligo occurs in 1-2 per cent of the population. It affects both races and all ages. (Melanocytes also impart color to the retina of the eye and the mucous membrane tissues lining the inside of the mouth, nose, genital and rectal areas). In Vitiligo, the special skin cells (melanocytes) as well as the tissues (mucous membranes) that line the inside of the mouth, nose, genital and rectal areas, and the retina of the eyes are destroyed. As a result, white patches of skin appear on different parts of the body.

Melanoma, or skin cancer, is the most common cause of cancer in fair-skinned people, although everyone is at risk: young and old, black and white, men and women. It is even becoming more common as people vacation more often, use sun beds and are victims of the depleting ozone layer.
