Britain experienced her coldest December for decades and it resulted in a rush for holidays for warmer climes, with the Mediterranean island of Malta getting a good number of bookings for January and February, along with more advanced bookings for the summer than the previous two years. It's welcome news for the island which has seen in common with other destinations a slow down of tourist arrivals since the economic crisis started in 2008.

Malta's tourism industry was saved by the entry into the market of budget airlines, turning a worsening position just a few years ago to an island that has a vibrant tourism sector. With higher airfares than competitors in the Mediterranean the number of holidays to Malta had been declining for some years, but eventually the authorities gave in to the inevitable and allowed Ryanair to start flights to Malta - and the island hasn't looked back since.

Hoping for a boost in tourists, the arrival of low cost flights to Malta is eagerly anticipated by hotels and holiday companies on the Mediterranean island.

The visit of Queen Elizabeth II to the island of Malta to open the recent Commonwealth meeting resulted in nearly a week of positive coverage for the island on television, print media and the internet.
