Mens watches are often welcome as gifts - but in some cases, have real symbolism.

Had the great songwriting team of Vincent Youmans, Mack Gordon and Harold Adamson been composing songs about mens watches when they penned the sentimental hit Time On My Hands back in 1930, the title might have been “Time On My Wrist,” for by then, mens watches had emerged from pockets for good, and are today perhaps the most popular and most frequently item of mens jewelry.

Modern mens wrist watches are more accurate and far more durable than those of a century ago. Today however, they are more than just timepieces; men’s gold watches serve as adornment as well. In fact, mens watches are the one piece of jewelry other than wedding bands that men regularly wear. In addition to retirement, men’s gold watches are excellent gifts for anniversaries and other special occasions.

Ironically, it was the pursuit of “manly activities” that led to the development of the first mens wrist watches. In 1905, early aircraft did not have fuel gauges, and the only way to tell how much fuel you had left was to know how much your engine consumed every hour (even today, aircraft fuel economy is described in terms of gallons per hour). In order to keep track, it was necessary to watch the clock – but when it came to the highly unstable aircraft of the early days, taking one’s hands off the controls for even a second was a bad idea. The first mens wrist watches were designed for aviators.

However effeminate they may have been considered, it was traditionally manly – and hazardous – activities that eventually brought about the existence of mens watches for the wrist. Specifically, these were deep-sea diving, aviation, and tragically, warfare. These early wrist watches for adventurous men, first appearing around 1905, were slow to catch on. However, in time the convenience of these timepieces became apparent, and mens watches jumped out the pockets and on to the wrists of men around the world.

You're familiar with the custom in which a man gives a woman a ring as an engagement gift, but did you know that in some places, women give mens watches for the same reason?

Watches define your sense of style; you can wear a different one for each different place you go. If we go back in history, then we realize that watches were made in the form of pocket watches and there was no concept of wrist watches. But with the passage of time usage of watches has been changed and these days common usage of watches is in the form of wrist watches.

Most people think of jewelry as a “woman’s thing,” but the fact is that mens jewelry has been a tradition in many cultures throughout the world dating back to the Stone Age.

The old warning “buyer beware” is very applicable when it comes to shopping for diamond watches. It is not recommended that such luxury watches be purchased online except from the most reputable dealers. If you do buy such a timepiece from an Internet dealer, make sure that the dealer has been authorized by the manufacturer of the watch – and if their prices on diamond watches seem unrealistically low, move on.

It’s well known that except for wedding bands and mens wrist watches, most men do not usually wear costume jewelry on a regular basis. This is one reason that timepieces such as men’s wrist watches make excellent gifts. For example, a man who leads an active lifestyle that includes “extreme” sports such as sky-diving, scuba-diving or off-road biking will need the durability and reliability of a dive watch, also known as a “navy watch.” These timepieces are exceptionally rugged and usually have multiple functions.

Certain watch companies specialize in luxury watches, embellished in diamonds, which are intended to be worn as jewelry. Cartier, Rolex, and Ebel all specialize in top quality luxury watches. Athletes are partial to the Rolex, because certain models are suitable for extreme sport use, such as mountain climbing, flying in an airplane, and deep sea diving. Rolex offers three lines of designer watches, which include the Cellini, Professional and Oyster Perpetual. Some of these watches are chonometers, while others are chronographs, and some combine both characteristics.

A diamond watch is a gift certain to make an impression - and the men who wear such luxury watches in the boardroom are certain to attract attention. The fact is that nothing proclaims high status and rank like men’s diamond watches; if you don’t know exactly what kind of gift to give, consider a diamond watch.

Watches are a huge part of our lives. We wear them to tell the time. We wear them to be fashionable. We wear them for other functions that they can perform, such as listening to music, using a calculator function on them or taking pictures.

For the man who makes his living as an entertainer, there are mens watches available that are bold, colorful and even eccentric. Some of these include novelty watches with designs inspired by popular films such as Star Wars or the Indiana Jones series.

Rings are a symbol of love, and a ring might be the perfect gift for a man. There are as many widths, metals and styles in which stylish rings come that you can be very selective about your choice. Several metals are now available, including the well-loved gold, silver, and even palladium, tungsten and platinum. Something with Celtic knotwork or Greek key designs can be engraved into the ring, as can words onto the inner part of the ring. A special sentiment can be remembered and forever immortalized in the walls of a beautiful ring.

Take a close look at what some of the A and B list actors are wearing. Whether it's in the movies or off-screen, actors are beginning to wear the odd bit of mens' jewellery. If you've seen the Bond movies, you may have spotted Pierce Brosnan wearing an enviously smart and sporty Omega Seamaster model on three occasions, the last being in Tomorrow Never Dies.

When does a ring stop being a man's ring? There seems to be a cross-fertilisation of style when it comes to jewellery.

The gift of timepieces is a venerable tradition. Designer watches are given for all sorts of reasons – birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and more. At one time, mens gold watches were traditionally given to employees once they had been at a company for forty years, or upon retirement. Women in Spain often give diamond watches to men upon acceptance of a marriage proposal and engagement ring. As you can see, timepieces are indeed a “timeless” and all-purpose gift.

Designer watches can be gripping. They tell their own tales and do so unequivocally. Yes, ladies love the idea of jewelry but at the same time they are besotted to the concept of designer watches. Men like flaunting it too. It is as if they make a secret pact with time and unruffled its majesty through the arc of these beautiful timepieces. James bond has been wearing a trademark Rolex right from his early days to the talked-about extravaganza Quantum of solace. Do we need a further testimony to understand the clout of these designer timepieces?

At one time, mens wedding bands did not even exist. They are a fairly recent phenomenon, having become common only in the past hundred years or so – and for much of that time, consisted of little more than a simple, unadorned gold ring.
