The first urban civilization in ancient Indian history starts with the birth of the Indus Valley Civilization which originated in the north-western part of the Indian subcontinent. Two major centres of this civilization were Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa. This Bronze Age soon gave way to the Iron Age Vedic period and gave rise to one of the major kingdoms known as the Mahajanapadas.
