Molds are small microscopic organisms and form a part of the nature. These molds are fungi that live on animal and plant matter. The molds are present in huge number of species and help in the breakdown of organic matter such as leaves, soil and foods. This breakdown of the dead material results in the recycle of the nutrients in the environment. The best place for the molds to grow is humid and damp conditions reproducing by making spores that in turn are spread through water, air and insects. These molds can cause serious allergic reactions to those who are highly sensitive and can create serious problem if they grow in buildings.

The term "toxic mold" is not accurate. While certain molds are toxigenic, meaning they can produce toxins (specifically mycotoxins), the molds themselves are not toxic, or poisonous. Hazards presented by molds that may produce mycotoxins should be considered the same as other common molds which can grow in your house. There is always a little mold everywhere - in the air and on many surfaces.

Molds usually enter a home through spores that pass through open doorways, ventilation, windows, heating and air conditioning systems that have outdoor air intakes. The mold spores also attach themselves to humans, animals, shoes, clothing, bags and other objects that are capable of carrying spores.

Mold exposure does not always present a health problem indoors. However some people are sensitive to molds. These people may experience symptoms such as nasal stuffiness, eye irritation, wheezing, or skin irritation when exposed to molds. Some people may have more severe reactions to molds. Severe reactions may occur among workers exposed to large amounts of molds in occupational settings, such as farmers working around moldy hay.

A 'mold' is a hollow or matrix which is generally used for shaping a fluid or plastic substance. It is a frame or model which is used to give a shape.

In contrast, microscopic fungi that grow as single cells are called yeasts. A connected network of these tubular branching hyphae has multiple, genetically identical nuclei and is considered a single organism, referred to as a colony or in more technical terms a mycelium.

Several scientific studies have confirmed that exposure to molds can trigger different health reactions from different people. The most common and mildest reactions are nasal congestion, irritation of the eyes, and slight skin itching. Exposure to higher concentrations of mold can cause fever and lung infections if unabated. Depending on the person, however, mold may trigger more severe and long-term ailments such as asthma, chronic sinusitis and others more because research has shown that mold may damage a person's immune system, thereby making the person susceptible to other diseases.
