The open sores which appear in the mouth are called as mouth ulcers. They are white or yellow in color, and are generally accompanied with a sharp pain, which is felt most when the person is eating. The pain is quite acute when salty or spicy food passes over the ulcer. Mouth ulcers can occur anywhere in the mouth - on the inner surface of the cheeks, lips, tongue, palate and at the base of the gums.

In this condition of gum bleeding the gums becomes swollen which is followed by lot of loss of blood from the mouth during eating, gargling or brushing. There may be redness on the inner cheeks and tongue, ulcers and the blisters, bleeding teeth and gums and there may be drooling at night.

A mouth ulcer canker sore appears inside the mouth and is red with a white coating. Young women in their teens and early twenties are more prone to canker sores. What causes a canker sore is not known, but it is thought to be related to stress, poor nutrition, allergy to certain foods and menstruation. It also might be connected to hormone changes. New drugs are being tested and are being found to be effective, but they first have to be approved by the FDA.
