In music there are two kinds of written language. There's what we usually call sheet music, and there's guitar tab. Conventional sheet music notation tells us everything we need to know about the piece of music we are looking at. It tells us which notes to play, for how long, at what pitch, and how loudly to play. Guitar tab is a very old form of written music which has become very popular amongst guitar players because it allows them to learn the notes of a piece very quickly without needing to learn the complexities of conventional music notation.

Beginner guitarists often get caught up in the question of whether to learn to read sheet music or simply learn from tablature. This article states the case for both forms of musical notation and brings to light the fact that the guitarist must find whether tab or sheet music fits the path he sees for himself as a musician.

In the simplest terms, a guitar tab is a word that is used to describe a musical notation, which may contain either numbers or letters and explains to the musician where to place his/her fingers on the instrument. Guitar tabs consist of multiple lines and is often called a 'staff notation.' These lines, which are present in guitar tabs, each represent one of the guitar strings.

So, what's the big deal? Why does everyone suggest that you learn a bunch of music theory? Why is it always a part of your course load, even if you don't plan to be a theorist? Well, it all boils down to communication. Understanding the fundamentals of our language is useful in much the same way than an understanding of English language is useful - it allows you to communicate effectively.

The professional players of the piano will play the music from the notes called fake book. This fake book contains different types of tones and also the chord symbols of the songs. The user should have knowledge about the chord usage. The piano will thus be played by reading a little note but will be playing more notes.

One of the languages of guitar music is tablature, often known simply as guitar tabs. Guitar tabs are quite easy to learn to read compared to conventional musical notation. If you decide to learn to read sheet music it will take a few weeks before you are beginning to make any sense out of it, and possibly a couple of months before you can read it fluently. Guitar tablature simply shows you where to put your fingers on the guitar fretboard.

For us sax players these flat notes are perfect to incorporate a "growl" sound to further emphasize that "bluesy" expression or make it a bit more nasty. Two other things to notice; the 3rd and 5th can be played as a flat or not but the 7th generally is only played as a flat and not the major 7th in this type of scale or musical genre.

Although it is not hard to read, many novice guitar players seem to be daunted by the prospect of learning something new. The real difficulty with learning how to read guitar tab is more of a mental block than a real challenge. Even though tablature has a history going back hundreds of years it is generally regarded as a special musical language for guitar players.
