Myopia is a vision problem that effects a large number of people, especially children. There has been debate in the medical community about whether of not the growth of myopia can be slowed. Research has demonstrated that rigid gas permeable contacts were able to slow down the development of myopia in over 25 per cent of children wearing them. There are a number of signals a child will give to show that they are suffering from this condition.

Cases of myopia worldwide have been on the rise over the past several decades and new research suggests that more than heredity plays into this. The prevalence of myopia, commonly referred to as nearsightedness, seems to be less in populations that spend more time outside and less time watching television and playing video games.

The cornea is a part of the eye that helps focus light to create an image on the retina. It works in much the same way that the lens of a camera focuses light to create an image on film. The bending and focusing of light is also known as refraction. Usually the shape of the cornea and the eye are not perfect and the image on the retina is out-of-focus (blurred) or distorted. These imperfections in the focusing power of the eye are called refractive errors. There are three primary types of refractive errors: myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Persons with myopia, or nearsightedness, have more difficulty seeing distant objects as clearly as near objects.

Laser vision correction is a procedure used to correct common eyesight problems such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and corneal irregularities (astigmatism). To understand more about laser vision correction, this article discusses the types of eyesight deficiencies and how these can be corrected using these new techniques.

Presbyopia, which causes those of us in our late 40's to need reading glasses is actually a loss of flexibility of the eye lens and cannot be treated with lasik corrective eye surgery. During lasik surgery the ophthalmologist actually reshapes the cornea with the use of a laser. How much reshaping you have done to your cornea depends entirely on your particular sight problem. The FDA first approved the excimer laser for eye correction in October of 1995. Lasik was approved in 1998.
