There are two fundamental approaches to moving data through a network of links and switches: circuit switching and packet switching. In circuit-switched networks, the resources needed along a path (buffets, link transmission rate) to provide for communication between the end systems are reserved for the duration of the communication session between the end-systems.

Earlier we said that a muter takes a packet arriving on one of its attached communication links and forwards that packet on to another of its attached communication links.

Packet filtering helps control packet movement through the network. Such control can help bound network traffic and limit network use by certain users or devices. To allow or reject packets from crossing specified router interfaces, we give access lists.

To pass the CCNP BSCI exam, you must master the basics and advanced details of EIGRP. Learn all about the EIGRP adjacency process from Chris Bryant, CCIE #12933.

These are some important information of Switch and Hubs, two important equipments in a network. Switch has replaced the bridge in the modern network, which is replacing routers in many instances as well. A switch is a box with multiple cable jacks in it that looks a lot like a hub. Some manufacturers have hubs and switches of various sizes that are all but identical in appearance. The difference between a hub and a switch is that while a hub forwards every incoming packet out via all ports, a switch forwards each incoming packet only to the port that offers access to the destination system.

To become a CCNA and CCNP, you've got to know how to analyze and troubleshoot network problems, and it all starts with ping. Learn how to analyze ping results from Chris Bryant, CCIE #12933.

Multicasting's confusing at first, but for your CCNP and CCIE studies, you must master the details. Learn about the RPF Check from Chris Bryant, CCIE #12933.

Routing is a relay system by which packets are forwarded from one device to another. Each device in the network as well as the network itself has a logical address so it can be identified and reached individually or as part of a larger group of devices. For a router to act as an effective relay device, it must be able to understand the logical topology of the network and to communicate with its neighboring devices.

CCNA candidates know what switching is, but what about the differences between packet, frame, cell, and circuit-switching? Learn how to keep these terms straight and pass the CCNA exam.

Configuring standard ACLs is a skill you'll use on all your Cisco exams. Learn the basics from Chris Bryant, CCIE #12933.

Wireless networks are threats to your network security. Most people leave their wireless network totally open, without any type of security. These folks are begging to be hacked. Routers are the critical part of all the networks and can be both security aid and security vulnerability. A router basically has more network interfaces through which network traffic is forwarded. Or it might be blocked. The router decides when to forward packets between the networks based on internal routing table.
