When we typically hear of plaster, we think of a white or off-white smooth surfacing material. Decorative plaster on the other hand is something quite different. No - it isn't some wild sculptural configuration like you might have seen in art history books. Today's decorative plaster is much more subtle than that, yet more visually stimulating at the same time.

Faux (pronounced Fo) finishing is a technique that uses paint to simulate various finishes, such as textured stone, lime washing, linen weave, crackle paste, distressed leather and more. Attractive it may be, but durable it is not. In fact, one paint manufacturer actually states in their brochure that the finished faux surface must be protected by painting with the color of your choice. It has been said that for every job there is a tool. That is the case with the tools used to apply the product commercially known as Venetian Plaster. At a seminar on Marmorino hosted by Rivesto-Marmorino(c) several months ago, there was an old plasterer from New Castle, Penn., that looked at these trowels and said, "What are these things?"
