A polygamous marriage is the union of one man and several women. It has been very popular since bible times and, the record breaker had to be King Solomon who had hundreds of wives. However, with the onset of the New Testament, Christians are now restricted and can only marry one wife. In Islam, they have very liberal rules in this regard and, a man can marry up to 4 wives.
Being polygamous in the olden days meant that you were a great man. Marrying more than one wife was one of the most prestigious practices especially in the African community. It was like declaring your wealth in the society. A man who took care of wives and their children need not to brag about his wealth. The truth was there for all to see.
I recently did an Internet search to find out why polygamy is banned in some places in the world and is not, and even encouraged, in others. Why? Because a few years ago I did a similar search and came up with essentially nothing. Those sites that talked about the illegality of polygamy basically listed where such bans were in effect but gave no reasons why, which of course was object of the exercise. The first time I did the search I was still an Internet novice, so I thought perhaps I hadn't done it right. Many religious groups will not support same sex marriage. However, as we continue into modernity, more and more people are becoming open to the idea of marriage.
The definition of marriage can be described as broad. This will depend on the structure or method of description. A marriage can be both described in few words and in many words. Legally, marriage is the union of two consenting adults who are sane; to live together until their marriage is dissolved by death or divorce. Another description of marriage is that it is a contract between two individuals, who have made it public that they are joint emotionally, economically and legally.
It is a popular belief that women - monogamic creatures, that they was created for family, for raise a family and for hearth and home. But it is not mean, that they cannot be untrue to husband. Marriage has always been viewed as a serious commitment between two people which often commands a lot of respect.

Under the rules of Islamic sharia, the husband can end his marriage unilaterally by simply announcing the words "I divorce my wife" or "I divorce you" three times. He does not need to justify his decision, nor explain any reason for his divorce and never need to enter a courtroom to end his marriage. Egyptian Muslim women however are denied equal right to divorce. They are trapped in unwanted marriages or left begging for a divorce that can take years to obtain and leave them destitute.
