Satellite Radio has become a very popular alternative to broadcast radio since its first release. It did take a while for the two competitors of satellite radio, Sirius and XM, to begin gaining customers. Equipment was expensive and bulky. There is also a monthly fee for the service, where broadcast radio is free. Satellite does have a few advantages against broadcast that helped it gain momentum more each year.

Radio antennas are the devices that are used to that send and receive radio signals. Radio waves cover only a small part of the electromagnetic spectrum, which is made up of waves with varying wavelengths. A radio antenna basically consists of long strips of aluminum that changes radio waves, traveling at light speed, into electricity, which is then used to manipulate the electromagnetic field. Radio waves are caught in the air and then filtered into the circuit box.

How does satellite radio work? To understand how satellite radio works you must first understand how analog radio works. Satellite radio works similarly but instead of using stationary transmitters with limited range to broadcast their media to the people, they use mobile Satellites.

You will never get static interferences while listening to over 100 radio channels. The idea behind satellite radio has appeared in 1992, when the United States Federal Communications Commission granted a spectrum of the S band (the 2.3 GHz frequency) for Digital Audio Radio Service.

Satellite radio is still a somewhat new concept to the modern world. Satellite TV transmits by using satellites located 22,000 miles above earth. Broadcasting from this height directly down to earth increases the signal strength and can ultimately reach a larger range of subscribers than terrestrial broadcasting TV land antennas. Satellite television systems transmit and receive radio signals using specialized antennas called satellite dishes. The subscriber's dish receives the signal from the satellite (or multiple satellites in the same part of the sky) and passes it on to the receiver in the subscriber's house.

A radio receiver always has a radio frequency section, which is tunable circuit connected to the antenna terminals. It is there to select the wanted frequency and reject some of the unwanted frequencies. However such a receiver need not have a radio frequency amplifier following this tuned circuit. If there is an amplifier its output is fed to the mixer at whose input another tunable circuit is present.
