  • The Nightshift - Sleepless in Seattle brings on new meaning when staying up all night has nothing to do with another person but rather the shameless addiction of the written word. I would love to be a day person at some point, maybe when I grow up because I do miss that late morning air however, the night dawns so quickly thus my day begins. Like a ghost I prowl the halls and corners at night searching myself for that next article or some great witty words that will stand out among the thousands. The right word that will make a difference in someone's life between crossing the line or playing it safe. The article that will either entice the customer to read more or to move on.
  • What to do When Kids Go off Their Meds: Brain-based Learning Strategies for ADD/ADHD - Steven Nissen, a prominent Cleveland Ohio Cardiologist recently prodded the FDA's Advisory committee to put a black box warning on Ritalin, warning of potential heart danger. Why? From 1999 to 2003, 81 deaths and 54 nonfatal cardiovascular events such as heart attacks have possible links to Ritalin and similar drugs. During the same period 78 million prescriptions were written for children up to the age of 18. Today two million kids a month take these drugs. These are startling statistics to put it mildly! Assuming Nissen is correct, Ritalin is a pretty dangerous method of improving brain-based learning.
  • Tarot Deck of Cards - The tarot deck of cards, usually 78 in number, is divided into two separate categories, the major and the minor arcana (arcana from the Latin meaning of closed or secret). There are 21 individual cards, referred to as trumps, and the fool card in the major arcana.
  • Origins and History of the Tarot - The origins of the Tarot are surrounded with myth and lore. It is hard to know for sure what the facts are. The Tarot has been thought to come from places like India, Egypt, China and Morocco. Others say the Tarot was brought to us from the Sufis or the Jewish Cabbalists. Still others contend that the origin of the tarot was from Moses. In the library of Alexandria, in Egypt, there were scrolls that were based on the Book of Thoth, an ancient book that came from Egypt's mystery schools. One theory is that the illustrations on the Tarot cards are secret teachings of the Book of Thoth hidden in the innocent pictures.
  • Teach Yourself to Read Faster - If you want to improve your reading speed, where should you start? The first step is to determine what your current reading speed is. Find some reading material to practice with, such as an article in a magazine, or use a chapter of a book. Set a timer for a short period, such as five or ten minutes. Start reading at your regular speed, and see how far you can get in the time allotted. Do not try to read faster or slower than normal; the object here is to find out what your regular reading speed is. When the time is finished, mark the page so you know exactly how far you read. You will need to count how many words you read in this amount of time.
  • Speed Read By Scanning The Book - Teaching a child the fundamentals of reading involves helping them learn the sounds each of the letters make and then joining those sounds together to form words. It's amazing watching and listening to a child as they string sounds together and make a word. They are thrilled and excited at their accomplishment and for the parent or teacher guiding them, it's a wonderful moment. Children use this skill to learn new words as they begin to grow. Over time they are able to recognize words and instead of sounding the letters out individually they recall the entire word from memory.
  • The Most Important Parts Of Any Book For Speed Reading - As we are reading a book we are often tempted to skip ahead to find out what happens next. It's much like watching a movie and wanting to fast forward to the scene where the mystery is solved. It's human nature to be impatient sometimes and although this might not sit well if you're telling someone the ending of a movie they have yet to see, it does work well when it comes to speed reading. One of the most important aspects of speed reading is retaining the information.
  • Speed Reading As A Study Aid - Any high school or college student will tell you that they spend many hours lost in their books, studying for exams. In order to ace the exam, it's essential that they know the material. In order to know the material that may mean reading it over and over again until the key details become ingrained in their mind. For a student who reads at a normal pace, this process can take hours and they may lose interest before they are adequately prepared.
  • Don't Quit Reading - Use Reading Glasses! - Vision Surgery may correct distance vision, but it creates the need for reading glasses. Reading glasses look like normal glasses, but they actually give you good distance vision and good reading vision. For detail activities such as prolonged reading, have a pair of reading glasses made that provide balanced near vision. Almost a third of the American population needs reading glasses, but engineers designing web sites are typically under 40 with perfect vision. This often leaves them with perfect reading vision, without glasses, in old age, despite having lost accommodation through presbyopia. People who do not need glasses for distance vision may only need half glasses or reading glasses. In the past, traditional eye exams for near vision have resulted in glasses suited only for reading printed material, not for viewing computer screens.
  • Hand Positions In Speed Reading - One of the most fascinating things about watching someone speed reading is the rate at which their hand glosses over the material they are reading. It moves so quickly and for the average reader, it seems as though it's moving much too fast for the person to be absorbing any part of the text. If you've always read at a natural speed, it might seem impossible to imagine that you could read several times faster. It might also seem unbelievable that you can adopt the principles behind speed reading without too much effort. Speed reading is based on the principle that your mind absorbs the material that you read at a quicker rate than someone who reads at a normal pace.
  • Reading Silently Can Help Speed Reading - Watch a group of young children who are just beginning to read and you'll notice one thing about almost all of them. Even if they have been instructed to silently read, most of the children will be mouthing the words they are reading. Their lips will move to pronounce the words, even though they are not speaking them aloud. The reason they do this is because as children begin to learn to read, they vocalize the sounds of the individual letters and then later on, the sounds of the words. Although this process is helpful to the children as they are introduced to the concept of reading, it's also significantly reducing the speed at which they read.
  • Teaching Children To Speed Read - How many of us wish we had known how to speed read back in grade school when the teacher assigned a book report over the winter holiday break?
  • Do Strong Readers Need Speed Reading? - If you're a strong reader, do you really need speed reading? If you're a student or professional, the answer should be obvious; it can only give you an edge. But more to the point, why keep your reading level at basic comprehension and average speed? If it's obvious that making a small change in your life results in a big difference, it's worth investigating.
  • The Best Position For Speed Reading - Speed reading is an acquired skill. It's not something that can be done by just anyone and it's also not something that can be done anywhere. You won't often see a person holding a book in their hand and speed reading as they are sitting on a park bench or riding on a bus. It requires not only a place of concentration but also a manner of positioning yourself and the book for the best possible results. In order for the eye to successfully scan the page at the rate that is required for speed reading, the reading material needs to be a certain distance from the eye and it also needs to be placed in a specific position.
  • How The Eyes Work During Speed Reading - If you've ever been witness to someone speed reading the sight can be remarkable. They turn the pages of a book at breakneck speed and often their hand is skimming the length of the pages very quickly. It's difficult to imagine that they are absorbing everything that they are reading.
  • Understanding The Basics Of Speed Reading - Speed reading is not just a parlor trick you can use to impress your friends and family. For many it's a necessary tool for managing time and information in the fast-paced business world, and for many others, specifically students, it's the only way to get through reading-heavy class loads. The practiced speed reader can pick up a lengthy document or a thick stack of papers and use their skill to get at the meat of the subject by skimming for the most important details and information. Without developing the ability to speed read, this time-saving technique is merely flipping through pages fast. Speed reading, or increasing the rate at which you read text, is linked to increasing the rate at which you understand what you're reading.
  • Do You Know When to Begin Teaching Your Child to Read(R) - It is never too early to begin teaching your child to read, or at least laying the foundation for early literacy skills, and it can definitely be left too late! If you are not sure then think about this. Statistically, more American children suffer long-term life-long harm from the process of learning to read than from parental abuse, accidents, and all other childhood diseases and disorders combined. In purely economic terms, reading related difficulties cost our nation more than the war on terrorism, crime, and drugs combined.
  • Better Speed Reading Techniques - Research shows that there is a big relationship between reading rate and reading comprehension. Some people read rapidly and comprehend well; others read slowly and comprehend badly. Thus, there is some reason to believe that the factors producing slow reading are also involved in lowered comprehension. Good comprehension depends on whether you can extract and retain the important ideas that you've read, not on how fast you read them. If you can do this fast, then your reading speed can be increased.
  • Communication Between God And Us - We all need a proper and clear line of communication. If there is any misunderstanding due to lack of effective communication, it can easily lead to chaos. Our mighty industrial world would grind to a halt. Every military campaign would flounder. Love and fellowship between human beings would be non-existent.
  • Spiritual Compass In Your Life - Why people need compass? People use it as an important equipment to steer them the way to their destination, whatever the conditions encountered.Similarly, when we embark on our spiritual journey, we need a spiritual compass to help us steer our way through the "minefield" of life's hurts, failures, and defeats that the Great Deceiver uses to lead us astray. Man has always used his conscience as a guide in his spiritual journey, but in today's world of compromise, our conscience is not always a sure guide.
