RFID or Radio Frequency Identification, is the new technology talked about for product identification and data storage that can be used where barcodes fail. It is based on the same concept as barcode except that the method of encoding data is different since barcodes require a line of sight optical scan. As an automatic identification technology it reads encoded data with the aid of radio frequency waves. Its biggest advantage is that it does not necessarily need a tag or label to be visible to read the data stored.
Package tracking is still far from being an exact science. Most current tracking systems still really upon bar code readers or even more manual ways of keeping track of everything. The RFID Credit Card Since June 2005, all American Express issued Blue credit cards have been imbedded with an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) transponder, in addition to the traditional credit card magnetic strip. RFID technology transmits information wirelessly between two or more objects in close proximity. This means that when you make purchases at any of the American Express ExpressPay participating merchants, you simply have to tap the credit card against, or hold it an inch or two away from the RFID reader, for the goods to be charged to your card.
