  • How To Stay Alert Whilst Driving - Sometimes driving can seem easy. Cruising along a major road or dual carriageway at a steady speed whilst listening to the radio can put you into a state of relaxation. Daydreams can fill your mind and you begin to drive as if on autopilot. However the result of this is that your concentration decreases and your changes of being involved in a road accident increase. It is vital that your try and stay alert at all times. The following guide shows you how you can maintain your concentration whilst driving.
  • Teen Drivers - Distractions and Other Risk Factors - Obviously, there are some pretty big differences in the danger factors between teen drivers and adults -- not the least of which are inexperience, risk taking, immaturity and greater risk exposure.
  • Tips for Safe Driving During the Holidays - Every year during the holiday season TV, radio, newspapers and others talk a lot about the hazards of drunk driving and remind us to be careful.
  • Pedestrians and Dangers from Hybrid Vehicles - The other day, I put a scare into both myself and a driver when I almost stepped out in front of her hybrid car. She was shaken up and looked stunned that an adult would be so careless. I was just embarrassed. But as I told a friend about it the next day, I found that it's more common than I thought. He had done the same thing a few weeks earlier. Then, someone else told me about a woman who was putting groceries in the trunk of her car and didn't even realize that a hybrid vehicle nearly backed into her! Hybrid cars are so popular that auto manufacturers are having a hard time keeping up with the demand. The ones already on the market include Toyota Prius, Toyota Camry, Toyota Highlander, Lexus, Honda Civic, Honda Accord and the Ford Escape.
  • Fleet Safety - How To Manage the Utilitarian Driver - "I want a raise." If you're a manager, you've heard that; and we've all said it. Let's face it. We need money to survive. So, you'd think everyone would be passionate about having a lot of it. Some people are driven by making money; others are content with just enough to get by (believe it or not).
  • Fleet Safety - How to Hire and Retain Cautious, Compliant Drivers - Do you want drivers who are accident-prone or drivers who've likely never caused an accident? What are you willing to do to get them?
  • Fleet Safety - How to Hire and Keep Steady, Reliable Drivers - Behavioral experts will tell you the safest drivers are those high in the S (Steadiness) and C (Compliant) behavioral factors. Research and experience prove this to be true. These are the good drivers you want to keep.
  • Fleet Safety - How To Manage the Interactive Driver - You know your drivers who have the core I (Influencing) behavioral style. They're the ones who are always talking! These drivers need to be around other people because socializing and verbalizing are two of their strongest needs. They'll get fidgety and bored if they have to drive a long way without interacting with other people. So, they may stop more often and take longer breaks to get energized, especially if their S factor is low. The person low in the S factor tends to be fast-paced, mobile, active, and restless. There are ways to effectively manage and motivate this type of driver. Keep in mind you can't change other people's natural behavioral style or attitude, but you can help these drivers work on the negative aspects of their core I style and become better drivers.
  • Fleet Safety - How To Manage the Hot-Tempered Driver - If you hire drivers who have a Core D (Dominant) behavioral style and/or a high Individualistic value, you're asking for trouble. They're accidents waiting to happen. These drivers crave power and control. They have a "my way on the highway" attitude. They take risks and lose their temper easily. If you already have people like this driving for your company, there are ways to manage and motivate them. Keep in mind you can't change a person's natural behavioral style or attitude, but you can make them aware of their negative tendencies in hopes they'll learn to be safer drivers. Understanding their need for authority and dominance over others, you can manage them more effectively by knowing that they need: - Encouragement to appreciate slower-moving people and have empathy for those who approach life differently than they do.
  • Fleet Driver Safety: Values Are Important - You probably wouldn't think a person's values would be a significant factor in whether he or she would be a safe driver. But research shows they are. Behavioral Values Research Associates conducted a safety study in 1993 on railway maintenance workers, people whose job certainly requires safety practices and attention to detail. Surprisingly, the study showed no significant differences between the injured and non-injured workers based on their level of safety training. There were significant differences, however, in their behavioral styles and values. Workers who ranked high in the Social (Humanitarian) value had better safety records than those low in this value.
