Every sales executive has heard how important it is to set sales goals. Don't worry, I'm not going to bore you with why you should set sales goals. But I am going to suggest a somewhat radical, new change to the way you currently set goals so you can achieve higher sales performance.

Having been a manager looking after medical sales people for many years, it's was often surprising to see what the real differences were between those who were good, and those who were very good in terms of sales results. In reality, the ones bringing in the best results were usually those who simply followed good practise consistently without deviation, compared to others who fell into the habit of looking for short cuts. Here's some of the most common bad habits I used to see.

We all think that incoming calls and “leads” should be easier because they’re not cold calls, right? Well, when you think about it, why aren’t they? Call centers are progressively more popular in today's society, where many companies have centralized customer service and support functions. Call centers employ many staff in customer service, sales and support functions.

The closer people get to the Christmas holidays, the more anarchy there is going to be with the influx of last-minute shoppers. It isn't unusual for people to start placing calls to sales lines to help finish off their shopping lists, which makes the days before the holidays the most hectic time for an inbound sales agent.

The vast majority of salespeople do not enjoy cold-calling…yet, it is an activity that most need to do on a regular basis. Here are some steps to practice this critical discipline.

Medical sales is a very competitive game and most of the people in it are just itching to beat their peers into second place. The paradox is that it can be this eagerness to achieve that can kill a potentially good performance. Where things tend to go wrong is the search for short cuts, the search for the one killer idea that no-one else has thought of that will propel them to the top. Unfortunately, in my experience this is usually and downfall, not a winning solution.
