When a car applies its brakes and suddenly comes to a halt everyone turns to look. They realize the sudden application of brakes implies that an extraordinary situation has occurred and that the driver of the car had to take emergency action and slam on the brakes. And though there are still a few accidents that do take place in most cases the sudden application of brakes saves the day. It is clear that when the brakes of a car are required to act they must start reducing the car in a small fraction a second and then once they have started they must bring the car to a complete halt very fast too.

When the hurtling mass of a car is brought to a halt in a few seconds by the car brakes it is the accomplishment of an immense task. One may think it is more difficult to make the car to start and accelerate than to stop but if you have any ridden a bicycle without brakes you will know how difficult it is to convert the kinetic energy of the moving bicycle to heat energy.

When your car cruises down the road at top speed it has a lot of kinetic energy. This kinetic energy is so much that unless it is reduced in a controlled manner it can smash the car up completely. If you have ever seen a car crash test video you will have some idea of the immense amount of energy that a moving car posses. Now that should make you wonder that when you apply the brakes where does all that energy go? After all you can slow down and even stop the car with your brakes and the car doesn't even get a scratch leave alone getting smashed up.

If you ask a person how does the car move forward you can expect the answer to be that the power from the engine drives the wheels and the car moves forward. If you pursue asking questions and follow up with, how does the engine generate power you can expect to get the answer that it gets the power by a controlled burning of the fuel. And if you will ask further questions about the parts involved you will find that a reasonable number of persons are familiar with terms such as a piston, cylinder, fuel injection and so on. That is to say even a lay person has some idea about how a car starts and gains speed.

What does replacing your car brakes and grabbing a beer have in common? If your wide pedal has been a little hoppy lately but your brew hasn't, read on for the answer.

A car is a dynamic product. When you turn the ignition key it is almost as if it comes alive. And often people ascribe a personality to their car. Now for most cars which are pretty versatile different types of uses by different car owners are quite fine. The cars are designed for a range of users and the varying driver habits are not a problem. So you have people who use their car well within its performance limits and others who look to push the envelope of the cars performance. But if you step out of the ordinary range then you should realize that you may have to consider modifications to your car.

Whether you drive a Mercedes, a motorbike or a pickup truck, you probably have disc brakes on your vehicle. And even though you probably never think about their function, they are the single most important function on your vehicle. Though there are several types of motor brakes, the drum and the disk, the disk brakes are more commonly used. Disc brakes are far better than drum brakes because of their powerful stopping ability.

Welcome to another episode of Mike the Misanthropic Mechanic. In this installment, Mike finds the time to creep out on his creeper and answer a reader's question about his wife's squeaky SUV brakes.

There is so much talk about cars getting more and more powerful. And most of this talk is about higher acceleration and a higher top speed. One would think that the only thing that one needs to do to get from one place to another is to start the car and go faster and faster till we arrive at the final destination. The problem with that is we would indeed arrive at the final destination but we would not be able to get off unless the car has great brakes to make a quick stop from all the speed that the car has gathered. After all both at the start and at the end of the journey the car should be standing still.

If you have to make sure you get great value for your money then you need to evaluate the various options available to you to spend that money. And to a reasonable extent that is possible but if there are many choices available to you then it will simply not be possible for you to evaluate each individual choice in great detail.

There was a time when the word cheap was almost certainly associated with something of an inferior quality. Nowadays though when we need to get more from our hard earned money cheap only means affordable and if you choose smartly you will get great quality at the same time.

While using the car the lay person will hardly get into the scientific details of the car ride. Of course the lay person will know some basic facts such as that the car powers itself by burning the fuel. And that this fuel is burnt in the engine and because of this the engine can get quite hot so the engine is kept cool with the help of coolants.

As a car owner you have probably enjoyed driving quite a few cars. You will know a lot about how one car differed from the other and that knowledge probably helped you choose a car that you would like. And you would look for means to express what it is about a car that you like. So if you liked to power of the car you would make a note of the car's engine size in terms of the displacement volume of the cylinders. If you liked the cars styling you would remember the contours and so on.

The star performers are those who deliver when it is crunch time, that is when the pressure to perform is very high and the situation hangs in balance. At such a time the outcome depends on the star performer's effort and the outcome can be quite seriously bad if the star performer does not deliver. In a movie at such a time the hero delivers the telling blow and saves the day and justifies his billing. But in real life it is not that there are always happy endings.

Brakes are among the essential components of your car. Even if your car brakes do not work, your car may still run. However, how can you make your car stop or slow down when you want to if your car brakes do not work? A car which has brakes that do not work would be much more likely involved in car crashes, collisions, and other vehicular accidents.

The various attributes and performance capabilities that your car has, need to be enjoyed responsibly to be truly fun. For example it does not make sense to drive a car so fast that it becomes a hazard for the driver, the passengers, the other cars on the road and the pedestrians. On the other hand a slow driver on a fast road can also pose risks to the traffic on the road. It is clear that safe and enjoyable driving requires you to have the right performance level.

In this latest episode of the Misanthropic Mechanic, everyone's favorite testy technician, Mike, teaches NASCAR fans about performance brakes, while tossing in some good-natured hillbilly ribbin'.
