Testing the pH (alkalinity or acidity) of your soil will tell you if it needs treatment to move it toward to proper pH balance for the crops you want to grow. It's important to know whether your soil is acid, which is below pH 7 on a scale from 0 to 14, or alkaline (above pH 7), because some nutrients are available to plants only within a specific pH range.

Begin by testing your soil to find out precisely what you've got to work with. Contact your local Cooperative Extension Service. Most counties and some universities have one; look in the phone book under "Cooperative," "Extension" or your county name to find out what is required for a soil test.

Soil is a mixture of tiny rock particles, living organisms, chemicals and the remains of dead plants and animals. These particles create the environment for billions of mostly tiny organisms to live. Larger organisms such as earthworms are also found in soil. A hobby farmer must improve soil health.

The best and most refined of organic matters is compost, which is organic matter and/or manures that have decomposed until they resemble loamy soil. Thoroughly decomposed compost contains lots of humus - the beneficial, soil-improving material your plants need.

Many plants grow in all types of soil conditions but there are few varieties so sensitive that in unfavorable conditions they become withered and dead. There are certain methods used to measure the soil acidity, i.e. pH meter or soil testing kit. The numerical assessment of the soil helps us to measure the alkalinity or acidity of soil. Anything above 7 on the scale will indicate the presence of alkaline soil or chalk it may be. Anything below 7 indicates the presence of acid soil.

Many times we buy plants on impulse then find there is nowhere in the garden that really suits them. Before buying plants carefully examine your garden to see how much sun and shade it gets, whether the soil is well drained or waterlogged and whether your aspect is sheltered or windswept. You'll then be equipped to go and buy the best plants for your situation; shade-loving plants for the sheltered areas, sun-lovers for the warm spots, drought-resistant plants for the parched areas which may be either sunny or shaded, and swamp plants for the poorly-drained parts.
