Certain conditions and diseases are found to increase the risk of developing primary esophageal cancer. It is health condition in which the stomach acid manages to get in to the esophagus from the stomach causing heartburn (a burning sensation felt in the mid region of the chest). The acid that enters the esophagus form stomach can damage the esophagus's mucosa, this is especially high in the lower third region.

The study was actually conducted among hot tea drinkers from Golestan Province situated in Iran where consuming hot tea is a very normal and common practice. It is the same area which had high number of esophageal cancer patients.

Esophagus is an important part of the human body which connects the throat and mouth with stomach and it is also called as the food pipe. The esophagus's muscular wall contracts when a person swallows the food for help it to get to the stomach smoothly. A person can get two main kinds of esophageal cancer called as the adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

Squamous esophageal cancer is considered as the most common cancer subtype (histologically) found in the middle and upper part of the esophagus characterized by high mortality rate. The incidence of this disease can vary to a great extent among various regions of the world and happens at a very high frequency in South America and Asia.

The past two decades the rise in esophageal cancer is seen in certain types of cancers like esophageal cancer and some types of cancer rates have fallen down considerably. Many scientists and researchers are puzzled due to the rise in esophageal cancer and the risk factors or causes. But some risk factors or causes are identified to influence the rise in esophageal cancer. By understanding them and by altering certain simple habits it has been found that the risk of getting esophageal cancer is lowered.

According to an older theory researchers believed that there was a strong relationship between soft drinks and rise in esophageal cancer rates. It is a known fact that the consumption of soft drinks or carbonated drinks have grown considerably in the past two decades and during the same period the rate of esophageal cancer too have risen.

In olden days patients diagnosed with esophageal cancer were often terminal and the risk factor that was mainly responsible for causing the disease was said to be smoking. Sufferers required surgery in order to make the swallowing of food very easy and also for improving their condition at least till they are alive. The type of esophageal cancer diagnosed was mostly squamous cell carcinoma. But now, the whole scenario is different as patients suffering from esophageal cancer are diagnosed earlier and that too with adenocarcinoma which can be cured most often.

When a person is suspected to have esophageal cancer exhibiting esophageal cancer symptoms they normally do not think that their stomach too might be affected because of the cancerous cells. Most often stomach or gastric cancer symptoms might not be detected in their early stages and might be only detected after it had spread till the stomach. Since stomach cancer symptoms are very similar to the symptoms caused by minor stomach ailments no one thinks them as serious and even ignore them.
