  • Hidden Dangers at the Gym for your Back and Body... - If you go to the gym to get healthy and fit, look good, feel good and pamper your ego, then I urge you take a minute to think about something... Do you remember the old adage, "People like to do what they are good at and comfortable with"? Are you living that old adage at the gym?
  • Is it Safe to Exercise after my Back Surgery? - Many people want to, but have never been given any specific instructions or guidelines to follow regarding what exercises to do after surgery. Some surgeons believe the surgery itself helps correct the problem. Most often than not, the problem was not addressed by the surgery. The surgery only addresses either a sign or symptom caused by the true problem.
  • The Healing Power of a Great Night's Sleep - What's the most time-consuming thing you do, day in and day out, every day of your life? Eating? I hope not. Sitting in traffic? Ditto. Watching TV? Nope. It's sleeping. You spend between six and 10 hours a night in bed. That's one-third of your life. And when it comes to back pain, those are some of the most important hours in your day. Sleep helps your body heal. It's really the only time your muscles can completely rest and recover.
  • Natural Skin Barriers - Disruption of the skin by acne inflammation, infection, solar damage, disease, injury due to trauma, surgery, skin burns, accidents, or by chemical, dermabrasion or laser procedures employed for skin rejuvenation, creates a signal to the natural immune system and starts responses that may or may not be effective...
  • Emotions and Health - For many years conventional medicine believed that your health was a matter of genetics, infection exposure, and lifestyle. It was a rare exception when emotional experience also played factor to your health condition. There is now solid science behind the correlation of emotional experience and a host of diseases and health conditions including heart disease, depression, obesity and chronic pain. When looking at the body as a whole, emotional experience now plays a significant part in your overall health. Fatigue and stress have been seen as culprits in hindering your health. Without dealing with their emotional health, no one can be really well. Little progress can be made curing a physical condition, no matter what therapy is used, until there is progress at the emotional level. Unresolved emotional issues contribute to failing physical problems.
  • Is That The Reason Why I Cannot Deal With Stress After A Traumatic Experience? Part 1 - Post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, has been called many names over the years. It was known as "shell-shock" in World War I and "battle fatigue" in World War II. The term post-traumatic stress disorder became well known during the war in Viet Nam. It simply means a person has experienced an overwhelming trauma and there is a delayed reaction that occurs days, months, or years after the original stress has occurred. However, the dynamics of post-traumatic stress disorder are very complex. The Three Brains I believe there are two ways that post-traumatic stress disorder develops.
  • Trigger Point Therapy - Research by Drs. Janet Travell and David Simons, authors of "The Trigger Point Manual," has shown that trigger points are the primary cause of pain at least 75 percent of the time and are a factor in nearly every painful condition.
  • How To Overcome Culture Shock - The term "culture shock" originated in the 1950s. Basically it describes the physical and emotional discomforts that occur when someone moves from one cultural environment to another. There are several stages to culture shock. In the holiday stage, which is the period just before and just after the move everything is new and exciting. One feels very energetic, enthusiastic and hopeful about everything in life. This is followed by the deterioration/ falling apart stage during which there may be great feelings of dissatisfaction. Things are difficult and one's excitement turns to distress. One goes through communication difficulties, impatience, anger, grief, and a feeling of inexperience. There is more hope during the adjustment stage. This is when you can see some direction, you are able to laugh at yourselves again and life begins to feel a bit more balanced.
  • Alternative Medicines And Treatment For Trauma Disorder - Cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) are injuries of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems that may be caused by repetitive tasks, forceful exertions, vibrations, mechanical compression (pressing against hard surfaces), or sustained or awkward positions. Cumulative trauma disorders are also called repetitive motion disorders (RMDs), overuse syndromes, regional musculoskeletal disorders, repetitive motion injuries, or repetitive strain injuries. Some patients with arm symptoms sense a loss of strength and may drop items because of problems with coordination. Symptoms often worsen with activity and ease with rest.
  • What to do When It All Hits the Fan! - Sometimes things just don't go the way we want them to. Everything hits the fan. We are besieged by problems and crises. These problems or crises show us what we are made of. They help us grow. They almost always precede any leap to a higher level. Heroes are forged in the crucible of adversity - Cowards too. The problems and challenges that we face can either make us or break us, either build us or bust us. You are not alone. Everybody faces challenges. Everybody faces tragedy. Everybody has traumatic experiences in their lives. Everybody has those days when nothing goes right and our dreams are dashed upon the shoals of reality.
  • The Effects of Negative Emotiions on your Health - Our body reacts to stress by producing the hormone adrenaline. For every molecule of adrenaline produced, one molecule of vitamin C is needed. A depletion of vitamin C in the body will lead to cardiovascular problems. Negative emotions are by far one of the 3 most important factors in illness with diet and environmental toxins. Included under emotions are: stress, work, family, neighbours, transport, depression, bad news, death relatives/ friends, loss of job, divorce, moving house and any negative event that worries or depresses you. It is not the event itself that is important but the way you process it. Yes, the way we process an event is what does the damage. Not the event itself.
  • Seat Belt Use and Traumatic Brain Injury - Because traumatic brain injuries cannot be cured in the traditional sense, preventive measures are the best weapons against them. And because the number-one cause of traumatic brain injuries among Americans who are less than 75 years old is auto accidents, one of the best ways to prevent a traumatic brain injury is to always use a seat belt. Seat belts have consistently been shown to dramatically reduce deaths and injuries in auto accidents.
  • Brain Injury in the Military: A Concerning Trend - Those men and women who choose to serve their country in the military unfortunately run a higher risk of incurring a traumatic brain injury (TBI) than those civilians who might be exposed to less risk. One reason for this is that military personnel are under a high risk for being involved in car accidents, which are the most common cause of all TBIs. In addition, military personnel are consistently at risk of being injured by powerful munitions, which can also cause a brain injury through concussive force.
  • Is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder on the Rise? - The national Institute of mental health states that post traumatic stress disorder is one of the five most recognized types of mental disorders. PTSD was originally identified as a post war syndrome due to the number of returning military veterans having this condition. It's interesting that many mental health care professionals consider stress disorder, an illness, condition or disorder at all. It seems that if a person who had experienced a very disturbing, unsettling or emotional event was NOT affected by it, they should be considered the one with a mental disorder. Post traumatic stress is associated with experiencing a potentially life-threatening situation, either directly or by proxy. A good example of this is the collective traumatic stress experienced by the United States Just after the World Trade Center Bombing.
  • Sports Related Traumatic Brain Injuries: An Overview - Traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs when the head strikes or is stuck by an object.
  • Options for Treatment of Traumatic Brain Injury Victims - Victims of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) have many different treatment options available. A traumatic brain injury is a brain injury where any type of blunt or piercing trauma to an individual's head causes significant brain damage. Treatment of a TBI begins with measures to stabilize the patient immediately following the injury.
  • Ademen Therapie: The Complete Self Healing System - To attain perfect health, all the aspects of a persons nature must be in balance. If you lack health either physically, or mentally or spiritually, you will be unable to realize the full wellness that you otherwise might. Even if you keep your physical health in perfect condition you still need to address your spiritual and mental health as well. This is what Ademen Therapie is for. Balance breathing is a process used by Ademen Therapie to build complete equilibrium, inner peace, and truly persistent joy.
  • Who Is Most at Risk of Suffering a Traumatic Brain Injury and What Are the Main Causes? - A traumatic brain injury (TBI) can be any injury where a sudden trauma causes brain damage. Traumatic brain injuries affect a wide variety of Americans every year, causing a multitude of symptoms that can vary from mild to extreme.
  • Abuse Victims Misdiagnosed - Some authorities say that up to 60 percent of psychiatric patients, both in-patient and out-patient, report childhood histories of physical or sexual abuse or both. This estimate excludes emotional abuse and neglect. My experience confirms that very many patients are suffering from PTSD (posttraumatic stress disorder) as a direct result of childhood maltreatment. But they do not know what their real problem is. And worse, they often get the insulting diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder! Psychologists and psychiatrists know what to expect in the way of symptoms with war veterans: PTSD. We know as fact that the experiences of war can produce in even the strongest individual the constellation of symptoms that therapists should recognize as trauma. But for some reason, we have only begun to make this same connection with people whose lives have been a "war.
  • Stepping Lightly Over Boxes of Medical Experience - A multi-vehicle trauma! This is what it is all about, I thought, as I followed my senior resident to the stairs. While my age placed my training against a St. Elsewhere's backdrop, my excitement was more consistent with the modern, high-energy ER soundtrack. The emergency room itself inspired excitement, and as a third year medical student I had not yet developed the healthy fear that affected more senior, and more answerable, members of our surgical team.
