It can be extremely exhausting if you're training or a triathlon, but know this: It doesn't have to be that way. Although a triathlon will challenge you physically, mentally, and emotionally, it can be a lot of fun too.

Now the dust has - just - settled on the streets of the London Marathon let's spare a thought for all those non-runners. Even before the race start, competition was keen with over 50,000 disappointed applicants unable to take part and the situation is no different across all the World Marathon Majors.

As a triathlete and a triathlon coach, I attended this year's TCR 2011 at Sandown Racecourse with the sole objective of launching the Palm Paddle into the triathlon world. Being there to promote a new product it forced me to question the many passers-by (looking interested or not!) about their swim ability. As a triathlon coach and a participant for over 20 years, I suspected that asking the question "are you interested in improving your swim technique" might provoke some thought process and hopefully get a positive response. In the majority of cases, the question had the desired effect - yes, I definitely need to improve my swimming.

Why do the Ironman Triathlon?

I've lost track of how many times over the years I've been asked why I commit so much of my time to preparing for yet another Ironman.

For a long time I found it difficult to come up with a reasonable response, because often I wasn't sure myself. I think what makes it difficult, is goals change as the years pass and so would the answer to the question.

Triathlon is the fastest growing sport in cycling. In fact, the triathlon sport grew 15 per cent last year when the bike business as a whole did not. I think there are some good reasons for this. I started out cycling for transportation, wound up racing, and now ride fast for fun. I get to see from a different perspective how steep the learning curve is for bike racing as opposed to triathlon.

The Hawaii Ironman grew from very humble beginnings. Really not much more than a few friends discussing who was the better athlete---a runner, a biker or a swimmer.

A suggestion was made that a race be invented that included all three elements. That day, an event was born that would change the landscape of sporting history.

What scares you the most about your upcoming ironman race? What's your fear-factor?

In preparing to take on the challenge of a first Ironman, I believe far too many athletes put too much emphasis on the bike they choose to purchase for the event.

Somewhere along the Ironman trail, many athletes have come to believe that the lighter, and more state of the art the bike, the faster they will finish the bike leg of the Ironman.

There are several run-equipment choices I feel can help you quite a lot in your quest for your first Ironman Trathlon finisher medal.

If I could take one thing back from all the ironman training I did over the years, it would be the thousands of laps I did in the pool with the hopes of thrashing out a faster swim time.

If you are an age grouper or a novice Ironman, there is really no point in spending hours and hours in the pool if you are already at the point where you can easily handle the distance.

Training diets come in dozens of shapes and sizes. It will just make you crazy! Trying to figure out what to eat and what not to eat. Especially when you start doing some serious training and you are HUNGRY when you get home. Well the good news is that I've tried pretty well all of the major diets over the years(and some not so major)and can cut out much of the guesswork for you. And no, I don't have a degree in nutrition.

Its been a long time since I raced in Kona, but I don't believe the Ironman-Hawaii course has changed all that much.

The swim course I'm sure, is much the same as it was back in the early 80's. Its truly unforgettable. Water so warm, that wetsuits are unnecessary. Tropical fish to marvel at for pretty well the length of the entire course. Water so clear, the bottom is clearly visible. The better to see the scuba divers sitting on the ocean floor, waving at you.

Full body massages are such a nice way to reward yourself, don't you think? After a long, stressful day at work, or running around with the kids and taking care of the house - wouldn't you just love to lie down and let someone massage all your cares away? Well guess what. If you were looking for an excuse to get a massage, you're going to get one (or more) right now.

As you start out on the ironman-marathon you will most likely experience several different emotions.

I used to find it very difficult at times to convince myself to leave the run-transition area. After a long hard bike it often feels that finishing the marathon distance would be next to impossible. It is at this point in the race that your determination and reslove may truly be tested. This is where the term "ironman" begins to have meaning.

There's lots of trial and error involved when you're attempting your first Ironman. These days there's lots of advice floating around out there and it can get confusing at times. After over 20 years on the Ironman scene, I've seen some of the same mistakes made over and over again by first time Ironman triathletes.
