Tsunami is an environmental disaster caused by earthquake in the sea bed which cannot be stopped but the lives can be saved by taking precautions. Tsunami prone areas should be justified and preventing measures should be taken for them before hand.

Tsunamis used to be the stuff of movies and until it's devastation in Asia, most people didn't think it was possible for tsunamis to occur in that magnitude. With that realization, people have become aware of the risk and possible consequences of this natural calamity.

In 2004, a tsunami swept over certain parts of Southeast Asia, which extended up to Africa. More than 200,000 people perished with some bodies never identified or recovered. The incident is not the first but one of many that have happened over the centuries. It is not only in the Pacific but also in the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean, which makes it everyone's concern.

There's no doubt that the safety of yourself and your loved ones should take priority. But do consider some form of natural disaster insurance policy, to avoid losing your home and possessions should a tsunami strike. At the very least, look into what your homeowners policy covers, and then weigh up the risks to decide whether you require extra coverage.

Thousands of disasters occur every year. They all don't affect thousands of people, but the impact is as dire for each one that has to experience it.
