We all very well know that too many people suffer from diabetes, which can be a killer disease, but many of us do not know the answer to that elementary question, 'What is diabetes?Here we basically try to answer that question. What is diabetes? Diabetes mellitus condition is, to put it very plainly, characterized by high levels of blood sugar.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus used to be called insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, or juvenile-onset diabetes mellitus, because it usually begins in childhood or adolescence.

The type I or type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease. In this, the immune system attacks the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas and destroys them. The pancreas then produces very little or no insulin. Thus, person suffering from type 1 diabetes must take insulin daily to live. Recent researches indicate that it takes about four to seven years for this destruction.
