"Vocal Variety" Articles

  • Debunking the 7 per cent Rule, Public Speaking's Most Pernicious Myth - Have you ever heard the adage that communication is only 7% verbal and 93% non-verbal, i.e. body language and vocal variety? You probably have, and if you have any sense at all, you have ignored it. There are certain "truths" that are prima face false. And this is one of them. Asserting that what you say is the least important part of a speech insults not only the intelligence of your audience, but your own intelligence as well. The whole objective of most speeches is to convey information, or to promote or defend a point of view. Certainly, proper vocal variety and body language can aid the process.
  • Beat the Fear of Speaking in Public - The fear of public speaking is all around us - just ask anybody how they felt when they were invited to speak for the first time. Don't worry, and even if you do - you're not alone. The fear of public speaking is the most serious phobia known to man. In a recent survey, 90% of people said that they would rather die than stand up and make a speech in front of their family, friends and colleagues. This is a serious problem. But how have we come about this crazy statistic? It's easy. Who wants to make a fool on themselves. I know that when I was a child, I was of terrified visiting my aunties and uncles' houses at the weekend, because we were expected to perform a 'party piece', a two minute tortuous entertainment.
  • The Dos and Dont's of MS Powerpoint - Why all the fuss about MS Powerpoint? There's only one way to achieve success with this application and that is not to succumb to it. Why is this? Well, the mistake that most inexperienced users make is that they think that Powerpoint is the presentation itself - whereas the truth is that Powerpoint is simply a tool to visually assist the speaker's key messages. People spend hours creating scores of slides with large chunks of text in a small font size. Make sure that you're using your voice to its maximum potential. Nobody wants to hear a monotonous drone.
