Bardney was once a slight island in the marshy ground around the river Witham. The "ey" part of the name means island, and it was named after Saxon landowner or chief, Bearda - hence Bearda's"ey" (Bearddanig), from which the name Bardney evolved. Before the River Witham was straightened in 1812 the abbey site would have been close to the river, and would have made an ideal spot for a monastery combining the isolation necessary for the religious life with the access to markets needed for economic survival.

The legend is that a bishop in the 8th century heard the voice of the Archangel Michael tell him to build the abbey. There had been churches on the site before, but the striking abbey of Mont Saint-Michel was what started drawing pilgrims. The land around the island is a flood plain, and it is often surrounded by water at high tide. There is a causeway that leads to the island. It is no longer as isolated as it once was because the causeway itself has stopped the flow of tides around the island and much of the bay has silted up.

Abbey is responsible for 1 in 10 mortgages in the UK and the bank said that these moves were both in line with current market trends and similar to moves made by other lenders. One year ago 158 mortgages were available for first-time buyers who had no deposit, today there are none.

A large amount of Britons are taking out loans in secret, as they are too ashamed to admit their financial position to friends and family.
