The presence of bullies and jerks in the workplace is not much of a concern for most companies. However, having too many of such people around and not actively avoiding a culture that fosters bullies, is not good practice. In fact it can have quite an impact on company performance and the bottom-line. This is because bullying can (among other things) have an effect on morale, health, productivity, idea generation and employee turnover.

Workplace bullying has become a huge problem. So much so, that local, state and the federal government are being compelled to provide protection for employees. However, like sexual harassment handling bullies is getting more attention because it is proving to be bad for business.

Australian Federal and State legislation states unlawful discrimination occurs when a group of people, individuals are treated less favourably than any other person or group of people because of their ethnicity, race, colour, sex, marital status, age or disability, religion and sexual reference, whether your a member of a trade union and any other characteristic specified under anti-discrimination or human rights legislation.

While these statistics may disturb you, they may not surprise you - the sting of the bully goes deep and most of us either know someone who has been bullied or have been bullied themselves. Ask anyone who has been bullied and their description usually includes words such as "torturous, destructive, cruel and devastating." I guess it doesn't really matter how you describe it - it is the cruelty of it that people don't forget...

In the worst case scenario murder, suicide or serious injury can result, but in most cases the injuries are psychological in nature. Over 30 per cent of youth or 5.7 million children admit to being a bully or being bullied. In truth, the total is probably much higher. As a society we owe it to our children to confront this problem and provide all students and faculty with appropriate training on how to confront and to halt bullying.

Bullying has indeed become a wide spread calamity in American schools with nearly 20 percent of children saying that they had bullied in one way or the other by other students. A bully intentionally harms or disturbs the victim in different ways that cause depression, low self-esteem, fear and pain. Bullies are often conscious of their acts and they know very well what they are doing. Though the motivation for their acts differs, the outcome is more or less similar; to make their victim insignificant. In this article I've tried to compile the five different forms of bullying that we see in our schools today.

In today's age of globalization, workplace discrimination is strictly forbidden by the laws of almost every state. However, there are still several companies that discriminate their employees or usually their applicants because of their race, religion or sexual preference. Remember that it is improper and unlawful for an employer to evaluate or fire an employee based on an illegal issue. And in order to protect the rights of all employees, there are legislations and measures that can help them if they're experiencing discrimination.
