Usually Heartworm affects dogs but sometimes cat are also diagnosed with this disease. Generally the blood vessels leaving and entering the heart and the chambers of the heart gets infected by this worm. Heartworm is caused by a parasitic roundworm known as Dirofilaria immitis. It is potentially a fatal disease. Heartworm is transmitted in the dogs by the larvae of mosquito during the process of its feeding. Then the larvae migrate to the heart and there they grow into adult worms. An adult female worm reproduces to microscopically small worms which remain circulating in the blood stream of dog.
