"Writing Tips" Articles

  • Don't Let Good Grammar Spoil Good Writing - If saying that good grammar can spoil good writing sounds like heresy, it was meant to. When I search the Web for writing tips, all too often the first bit of advice that comes back is "Be sure to use good grammar". But that's putting the cart before the horse.
  • To Whom it May Concern - Over 85 per cent of utilities have failed to develop a clear strategy on how they communicate with their customers in writing. It is true that telephone skills and technology are fundamental to good customer care, but a truly customer-orientated approach must be reflected in letters, emails, bills, statements, and terms and conditions too. After all, there is no point in claiming to be customer focused and then sending out bills that are indecipherable, emails that fail to respond to the customer’s query, or letters that are long-winded and evasive. Bad writing is not only confusing and annoying for customers, but expensive for utilities. The first thing a customer who is baffled or irritated by a poorly written letter or bill will do is pick up the telephone to the call centre, costing the company unnecessary time and money.
  • Don't Write Short Texts, Write Concise Ones - If you are puzzled by this admonition, it is probably because you have been led to believe that "short" and "concise" are synonyms. They aren’t. My dictionary shows two definitions for "concise": 1. Brief and to the point 2. Short and clear. If "short" is already part of the definition of concise, they cannot be synonyms. There must be a difference. So what is it, and how does it affect your writing?

In order to catch their attention, you have to make sure that your resume stands out among the rest. In fact, resume writing tips are the secret weapon of many successful job applicants! You might think that a resume is only a piece of paper and that what matters most is the interview itself. However, know that applying resume writing tips on your own profile automatically gives you an edge over the others!
  • How to Apply the Three Acid Tests of Persuasive Writing - "If you don't know what you are looking for, you are unlikely to find it, even if it's right in front of your nose.
  • Shakespeare: What Can a Great Poet Teach Us about Clear, Concise Expository Writing? - William Shakespeare was unquestionably one of the world's greatest poets and poetic playwrights. Arguably, his mastery of English far surpassed that of anyone else who ever put pen to paper. So what can Shakespeare -- a genius at playing the language almost like a violin -- possibly teach us about expository (non-fiction) writing, where ideas must prevail and the language made as inconspicuous as possible? He can teach us that being a truly accomplished writer means knowing when to turn a beautiful phrase and when to speak plainly. Perhaps more than anyone else, a poet recognizes that the result that must take pride of place, not the techniques used to achieve it. Ask anyone to recite something from Shakespeare.
  • Pithy Prose: The Wit and Wisdom of People Named 'H' - Part 7 of an occasional series I am a collector of quotations. I have been ever since I learned how to write, I mean professionally, not in primary school. I am particularly fond of what I like to call "pithy prose". These short quotations can cover an unlimited variety of subjects: love, religion, politics, human nature, etc. What unites them is their ability to say more in one or two sentences than could be expressed in a thousand-word treatise.
  • Copywriting Tips - 9 Powerful Ways to Grab and Hold Your Prospects' Attention - One of the most important copywriting tips is to immediately grab your target prospects’ attention. Once you’ve captured their interest, you have to keep them glued to your message. All your efforts in creating the sales letter will go to waste if people will not even begin to read it. Once your prospects read the first 25% of the entire sales message, there’s a good chance they’ll continue reading. That’s why it’s vital that the first few parts of the sales letter grab their eyeballs or arouse their curiosity so much that they can’t stop reading. Here are some vital copywriting tips to grab your prospects’ attention and keep it longer. 1) The most important part of your sales letter is your headline.
  • The Makings of a Personal Essay, Really - Sometimes I can be dense when it comes to realizing the potential of my own life experiences as essays for magazines. I, of course, fully believe that everything in my life is newsworthy, but sometimes have trouble figuring out which experiences will hit home with other people. I recently learned the secret, and it can be summarized in one word: Really? My friends know that I can talk. I mean, I can talk! Get me on the phone and I’m likely to tell you all about my day, from my breakfast to my editor’s latest comments to my insomnia.
  • Distinctiveness in Personal Statements - Byproduct or Goal? - "What makes you unique is not that you have had these life-altering experiences, but rather how and why your perspective has changed or been reinforced as a result of those and other everyday experiences. That is a story that only you can tell. If you concentrate your efforts on telling us who you are, differentiation will occur naturally; if your goal is to appear unique, you may achieve the opposite effect." So wrote Derek Bolton, Assistant Dean and Director of Stanford GSB Admissions, in his most recent and excellent monthly column, "The Director’s Corner," for Stanford’s MBA Admissions Newsletter. I have read many application essays where the author aimed for distinctiveness and failed miserably to achieve it, just as Mr. Bolton says.
  • Savage Nature: The Life of Ted Hughes - One of the most important poets of the post-war period, Edward James Hughes (1930-1998), was drawn towards the primitive.
  • Quick Strategies For Writing Your Essay Under Pressure - Hidden pitfalls are on watch for your paper success in every paragraph of the essay you write. They are notorious misprints, insidious misspellings and numerous stylistic, syntax and format errors.
  • SEO Article Writing 101 - SEO writing is very different from content writing, article writing, story writing and news writing. When I first realized my innate talent for writing stuff and putting thoughts into words, I was still reading Mills and Boons, and it was during this time that my romance storybooks were confiscated by my classroom teacher because I was reading in class. Writing is a very personal thing, I discovered. Some people have the talent for writing creative stuff. Some people have the talent for writing ads. Some write excellent factual stuff. Well, I fall into the factual stuff category. The boring-writing-technical-mumbo-jumbo writing stuff.
  • Unusual Points of View - Most writers are familiar with first and third points of view and their variations. But have you ever experimented with alternative points of view? Below are some less used points of view, what I call “unusual points of view.” Try using these when you’re blocked or you want to try something new. Second Person Point of View Second person can be written as “you” singular or plural. Josip Novakovich in FICTION WRITER’S WORKSHOP says: “The author makes believe he’s talking to someone, describing what the person addressed is doing. But the ‘you’ is not the reader; though sometimes it’s hard to get rid of the impression the author is addressing you directly.” Here’s an excerpt from Italo Calvino’s first chapter of If on a winter night a traveler.
  • The Writing Club - Typically when falling asleep in bed at night great thoughts enter the mind, long stringed and meaningful sentences trip over each other to receive attention at the front of the brain alongside all the brilliant findings, results, meanings that speak volumes and hard hitting phrases that are just the ticket to open the door to success. The last thought in the brain before sleep overrides this brilliant future work is, “must use that tomorrow”. The next day as you stumble out of bed to clean the teeth with little enthusiasm and to sit staring inanely at a pot of hot water (the coffee machine that you had forgotten to put the coffee in yet again) these thoughts are still asleep.
  • Don't Miss These 10 Must Know Facts About Promoting Your Website with Article Writing - Most all ezine publishers need fresh content. Article writing is something that gets tedious to the publisher who sends out an ezine every week. Fresh, unique ideas are always attractive, and ezine authors don't mind publishing others work, (along with a complete research box, (THIS IS YOUR AD) as well. If you can learn and excel with this kind of content writing, you can win in two areas.
  • From Book Notes to Book Reports - Writing papers and book reports has long been the bane of high school and college students’ existence. It seems that no matter how hard you work to stay caught up, there is always a paper due tomorrow. Using book notes to help get the ideas flowing can save you time, heartache, and the stress of getting a bad grade.
  • Write Strategy - Think, Believe, Attack - Think of writing like karate... it's about DISCIPLINE. Writing, like other forms of art, work or talent, requires discipline. It won't ever be enough that you say to yourself that you are a writer. Only when you write and write with discipline can you call yourself one. Before you can earn a black belt in karate, you have to dedicate yourself, practice and instill discipline in yourself to learn the moves and techniques. The same goes for writing.
