"Emotion" Articles

  • Women's Choice In Comfort Foods Can Be Unhealthy For Heart - It is believed that our diet will partly determine how high the risk of getting heart disease. Under normal circumstances, people who are told to adopt a healthy diet will probably adhere to this advice, especially those who have already had or are on the verge of getting into health problems. But, when they are in negative emotions, they will tend to change their choices. An interesting research, conducted by Cornell University researchers in 2005, showed that there is gender difference between men and women in what trigger them to turn to and what they choose as their comfort foods. The study was conducted with researchers from McGill University in Canada and was drawn from a web-based survey of 277 participants, of which 81 were males.
  • The Business Case for Emotionally Intelligent Leadership - As leaders around the world have learned about emotional intelligence, many have immediately seen how these concepts could improve critical areas of people-performance. World-leading organizations from American Express to Federal Express, from the US Air Force to Sheraton are experimenting with emotional intelligence as a component of competitive advantage. The Harvard Business Review (HBR), one of the most prestigious sources of business-best-practice, has released several articles on emotional intelligence. Their 1997 article by psychologist and author Daniel Goleman ranks as their most requested article ever. This popularity led the HBR to re-examine the data on emotional intelligence again in 2003. Their conclusion: "In hard times, the soft stuff often goes away. But emotional intelligence, it turns out, isn't so soft.
  • Seizing the Moment: Live It - Happiness, motivation, peak performance, and energy come when we're living in the moment.
  • Top Ten Ways of Moving Through Anger - Our culture makes anger a dirty word. Yet, it is an emotion that deserves attention. Because it has not received the proper attention, it is responsible for coming out "all wrong" and come out it will. The way to manage anger is by recognizing it as a valid emotion with a purpose. Next time you are angry, look at it as a form of information that has a message for you. Determine the message and act in a way that satisfies the message with self-respect and respect for others. Here are ten points to keep in mind as you move through anger: 1. Recognize that anger is a valid message that something is wrong. 2.
  • Experience is a Great Motivator - Do you know the saying, "we are all a product of our experiences"? If you have gone through a major life change or trauma which created the physical symptoms of anxiety or grief, you understand how physically uncomfortable this can be with stomach aches, elevated heart rates and such. Not only do these symptoms happen at the time; but often months or years later, a memory of the event can trigger these symptoms again. These are strong emotions associated with big events. Most of us like to avoid uncomfortable feelings whenever possible, right? I know I do. With big, life altering events, it's easy to recognize memories and events that "trigger" bad feelings. The emotions are strong and hence the physical response is strong as well.
  • The Power of Passion - Before we launch into this article, I want to share a case study with you. There once was a man, Jack, who worked very hard in his job.
  • Christmas: How the World celebrates this Holiday - Christmas has always been an occasion that every Christian looks forward to, but by Jove, it's not just them today, but people from Australia to Japan who does not want to miss a...
  • How To Instantly Stop Those Food Cravings - Whether it's chocolate or pizza, pasta or Danish, most of us have a food craving we just can't seem to control. Unfortunately, these cravings are rarely for foods that are good for us.
  • When Intention Is Not Enough - We all have moments when we want to improve something in our lives. Whether it is to lose weight, exercise more, fight less with family, or remember birthdays, the attempt fades into the distance when we are slaves to our stress induced schedules. It is not that easy to add something new to the plate when it is already full.
  • Weight Loss Sabotage: Managing ANTS - I was fortunate enough to watch some of the Wimbledon final this year. It was such a treat to watch the 2 best tennis players in the world battle it out. But I couldn't help noticing what the commentators said whenever a player missed a shot. Apparently the grass surface had been beaten down, so the missed shots were often attributed to the uneven surface: ". . . the ball skipped on the surface" ". . . the grass is really slick" Or the weather: ". . .
  • Life and Lust in a Leather Skirt - Leather clothing is more popular today than ever before, especially for women. In every type of media, from magazines to movies and television, you'll see women in leather. From stylish office wear to casual outfits to hot sexy costumes, leather clothing can reflect so many moods. As women, we use clothing to make a statement, to show our style, to give a hint of how we feel about ourselves and the world around us. We've all heard the saying,"Dress for success!" Well, success can mean many different things to women. Success can also mean different things at different times to the same woman. There are times we want to feel attractive, to stand out from the crowd, to say to the world, "Look at me!".
  • Boundaries and Forgiveness: One at the Expense of the Other? - In my life and in other peoples"lives, I see people wanting to be forgiving. I see them sacrifice their boundaries. I see them thinking that in order to be forgiving, they need to sacrifice their boundaries. I believe that this is flawed thinking. I have learned and continue to learn that boundaries are a healthy part of our spiritual makeup and contribute to growth. I have had to make a conscious effort to identify my boundaries. I have had to recognize when people have violated my boundaries. And I have had to confront them when they have crossed my boundaries and inform them that they cannot do this again. It has been a process of effort and discomfort. It has shown me how my self-doubt has caused my boundaries to weaken.
  • Is Forgiveness Always Divine? - A child takes birth and brings joy in the life of everyone with his smile. He is always happy himself and at the same time he makes everyone happy. As he grows older he experiences sweet and bitter incidents that encircle his life. The sweet experiences of life remain cherished. But when someone looks back upon the bitter ones, he is frustrated. And he is keen to punish the people responsible for adding bitter experiences in his life. He wants to make their life bitter too. But such grievances do not help others in rectifying themselves. Rather they become more aggressive. We may possess grievances against many persons, and that too, may be for a number of reasons. You may be angry on someone for insulting you.
  • Being an Optimist - Part 2 - ENERGIZATION Now pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start to feel good about yourself. Take a lesson from Step 4, "Practice Emotional Broadcasting," and have a chat with the poor little guy. Help him dispute feeling badly about himself. Tell him accidents do happen and that he's a great little guy. Provide a real emotional bond. Try the same thing when you get into an altercation with adults. Let the anger cool, then try to change the emotional atmosphere so that you are energized by the situation and walk away feeling better for having undergone it. Once you change your explanatory style from pessimistic to optimistic, research suggests that the change is permanent.
  • Top Ten Ways of Increasing Your Emotional Intelligence Now - 1. 'Get it' that all your emotions are OK. We are designed to have emotions. They have a purpose. They are our internal guidance system. We have ignored them. We are taught by our culture and our family to ignore them. Science is now showing us the value of emotion. People who use emotion and reason together are more successful and happier than those who don't. Look for a surround yourself with the messages that show yourself that emotions are okay - all of them. Some ways to do that is through books, other forms of reading, tapes, websites, friends, mentors, coaches, therapists. 2.
  • Take 12 Strokes off Your Golf Game by Overcoming Cathexis with Kenosis - What? - Every summer for the past five or six years I have reread Scott Peck's quirky book about psychiatry and golf, Golf and the Spirit. Peck is probably better known for his best selling books about his experiences and insights as a psychiatrist, such as, A Road Less Travelled. In Golf and the Spirit, Peck combines his love for golf and what golf has taught him about the human condition and relates that to his years as a psychiatrist, and what studying the human condition that has taught him about golf. If that sounds a bit convoluted, well, paradox is one of the recurring themes in the book.
  • Need a Change? How to Know for Sure! - You wake up on the wrong side of the bed. You snap at your friends and family. Stress fills your days and when your day is over, and you're exhausted, you can't sleep. Nothing feels quite right.
  • Win their hearts, Not their Minds - Hey guys, Have you ever heard someone say that women are really emotional? Well, it's true. And actually, everyone is very emotional... whether we like to believe so or not. We make emotional decisions and then justify our behavior with logic. Let me share something with you that happens nearly every time I'm out with my girlfriend... Whenever I go out with my girlfriend, guys always try to come up and hit on her. It'll go really badly for them and at some point my girlfriend will tell them that I can help them get better success with women because I teach men how to meet and date women. The next thing I know, the guys are trying to convince my girlfriend that she shouldn't be with me and that they are much nicer guys that she should be with.
  • Thoughts on Playing Your Age - There is a saying in golf - I hope I live long enough to play my age. I've known a few golfers who can attest to this claim.
  • We All Feel Better After A Spring Clean! - We all feel better after a spring clean. To be able to enjoy the space that has for so long cluttered the corners, restores a level of energy to ones spirit. As a hypnotherapist, some of the hypnotherapy work I enjoy most is empowering others to clear negative emotions from their past. These negative emotions are caused by past events which still cause unwanted feelings. When a person replays the past event in their mind, they create all of the bad feeling from that time. With the help of a vivid imagination (a form of trance in itself), they can even make the old event seem worse than it was at the time, and make themselves feel really bad!
