  • Make Your Neighbors Green with Envy! - It is getting more and more popular to 'go green', and many Americans are leading the way in their housing choices. One area recently reported that their realty market was stagnant except for a big rush on newly built homes that were extremely energy conscious to run. They boasted solar heating and this is one smart choice in a sunny area. Your neighbor's bill will be twice as high as yours, you will always have hot water to hand and solar power can be transformed into other energy and stored for when you want to run different appliances.
  • Can Learning Languages Help You Better Understand Science and Technology? - "I was 24 years old when I first began thinking and speaking in a foreign language. It was like being released from prison. I saw my cell door swinging open and my mind flying free. That was over 40 years ago, but the picture is as fresh now as if it had just happened." I am a linguistic iconoclast. Throughout my life (I am now in my seventh decade), I have heard the mantra that learning a foreign language gives you invaluable insights into the cultures of the people who speak it. I don't believe it.

Eco-Friendly Builders who are Making a Difference While building a green home is a challenge in itself, giving back to the community and trying to make a difference at the same time is really an achievement to be proud of.
  • Energy Saving Tips - Heating and Cooling - Heating and cooling your home uses more energy and drains more energy dollars than any other system in your home. Typically, 61% of your utility bill goes for heating and cooling. What’s more, heating and cooling systems in the United States together emit over a half billion tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year, adding to global warming.
  • Western Wind Powers California - Wind is not only the cleanest source of energy available to humanity, it is also the world’s fastest growing source of electrical power. But the United States has been slow to adopt. A Canadian company is changing that though – one wind farm at a time. Western Wind Energy Corp (TSX.V:WND) is North America’s largest publicly traded pure wind energy producer, currently providing 34 megawatts of wind turbine-generated electricity to the California electrical grid. Right now, it is the only publicly traded company in North America deriving its income exclusively from the sale of electricity generated from wind power. With the announcement on February 14th of the successful acquisition of a 100 MW wind and solar energy site near Barstow, California, Western Wind has an additional 1,300 MW in its pipeline of expansion sites throughout the state.
  • Pinetree Capital: Investing in an Investor - Seldom a week passes without news of another investment by Pinetree Capital Ltd. (TSX:PNP) in an emerging resource or technology company. Pinetree has a lean corporate structure and visionary business model that makes it part investment fund, part investment bank. But unlike funds, who evaluate potential investments largely according to formulas and criteria that meet a pre-defined investment model, Pinetree chooses investments based on sector, asset quality, and management. When they see a company they like, they are able to structure a financing in the target company that is good for both Pinetree and the company in whom they invest.
  • Healing Your DNA - What's in Your Genes? - The main message of The Secret is "when your thoughts and emotions are aligned you can manifest your heart's desire." This is true, and for most of us, it is doable to change our thoughts. The part that is challenging is to align our underlying emotions with those new positive thoughts, especially when so many of them are hidden away in our subconscious. But hidden or not, they still emit a signal to the Universe. These emotions come from our belief systems and many of those beliefs are programmed and handed down through our DNA.
  • How is Oil Formed - Crude Oil is Solar Power - Oil and Natural gas are among the most valuable and sought after natural resources being used today. Crude Oil is the organic compound harvested from the Earth that is used to make all forms of petroleum products. Refineries convert most crude oil into energy producing compounds such as gasoline, diesel fuel, liquefied petroleum gas, jet fuel, and heating gases such as propane. However, a surprising amount of everyday products also contain petroleum components. This long list includes deodorant, plastics, inks, eyeglasses, tires, paraffin wax, lubricants, cleaning products, heart valves, and bubble gum. Another important derivative is used in road asphalt. The U.S. consumes about 22 million barrels of oil/day, most of which is imported from other countries such as Canada, and Saudi Arabia. A 45 gallon barrel of crude oil can be converted to approximately 20 gallons of automotive fuel.
  • Cleaning Up Kuwait Oil Fields - At the outset of the Gulf War in 1991, Iraq's generals gave orders to demolish Kuwait's oil production facilities and wells to insure the coalition forces would recapture nothing of value. The ensuing scorched earth tactics led to the destruction of over 85% of Kuwaiti oil wells. Serious fires erupted in over 600 of the 700 wells that were blown up sending up toxic clouds of smoke. Oil flowed at uncontrolled rates. Enormous lakes of oil covering 100's of square kilometers formed in the flat desert. Another hope was that the massive flames and smoke would prevent coalition forces from operating; however it had very little impact on the advancing troops.
  • Drilling in Ultra-deep Water - As the major terrestrial oil fields near retirement, there is an ever increasing drive to bring deep sea oil fields to production. The Gulf of Mexico is thought to contain the largest untapped oil reserves in the world. Based on current findings, some estimates by the Department of the Interior Mineral Management Services number reserves at over 100 billion barrels. Finding oil in deep water is one thing, but extracting it from these undersea reservoirs is an entirely different challenge. Deep water rigs are designed to overcome the unique technical problems associated with deep water drilling.
  • The Oil Change - You are on your way home late at night and you notice the check engine light is on. What could be the problem? It dawns on you that it has been quite a while since you last checked or changed the oil.

Cellular shades, also know as honeycomb shades, are an easy and relatively affordable way to lower your heating and cooling costs. This is good for you and the planet. More and more people are doing what they can by purchasing more energy efficient cars, replacing incandescent light bulbs with long-lasting florescent bulbs, adding solar panels and much more.
  • Making Change Permanent - Starting to make healthier lifestyle changes is not as hard as it seems. Many people created New Years goals this year to help them get in shape, lose weight, or eat better. The hard part for most is sticking to those goals once they have started. Life gets busy, we lose energy, or we do not immediately see the results we desire. On the other hand, there are some who hang in there and are extremely successful.
  • Harness Your Energy with Breath Control - You probably already know that the brain has two hemispheres, the right and left, and that the left side of the brain generally controls the right side of the body and vice versa. The left part of the brain is in control when logic is needed. It controls verbal tasks, paying attention to details and linear thinking. The right hemisphere, on the other hand, is more creative. It covers visualization and intuition. Wouldn't it be great if you could call on the creative or the logical qualities of your mind or the other when you needed it? The truth is you can, just by using a little breath control.
  • Time To Tighten The Belts: Part 1 - Conserving Energy in The Home - We are all looking at the news and even the most optimistic of us are realizing that things may change for a while. We've been here before, we've seen the rising prices, the unemployment and the foreclosures - but for many of us the problem becomes more individualized. What can we do to preserve ourselves; to keep the roof over our own heads? Home energy costs are a large monthly outlay for all of us at this time of year. Americans spend more than $160 billion a year to heat, cool, light, and live in our homes. This is about 21 percent of the national total and many households could save 20-30 percent on their household energy bills. Small savings may seem futile when we consider the big picture, but many little savings will actually lower your bills.
  • Time To Tightening The Belt: Pt2 - Saving Appliance Energy - Part 2 Appliances. When crude oil finally hit the $100.00 per barrel mark, we all groaned inwardly knowing that the price will just be passed onto us. Never mind our environmental conscience, now we have to try and cut down just because of our wallets! The Labor Department has also released figures showing that unemployment benefits are at the highest level for two years. As the American dollar is at its lowest against other International currencies since comparison records began, we know that what we buy will cost more. We must buy less, spend less and use less to get through.
