  • Derby Winners Often Repeat in the Preakness - Six Kentucky Derby winners in the past nine years have captured the Preakness, four by 1Â1/2 lengths or more. That's a good omen for Barbaro, who crushed the opposition, winning the 132nd Kentucky Derby and ending a 50-year losing streak by 3-year-olds resting five weeks or longer after their final prep. Needles was off six weeks before his triumph at Churchill Downs in 1956. Both had won the Florida Derby. However, Needles was edged out by Fabius in the Preakness. Barbaro is likely to face 14 fewer horses than he defeated at Louisville when he won by 6Â1/2 lengths; this was the largest margin since '46 when Triple Crown champ Assault scored by 8 lengths at the 1Â1/4 miles.
  • Basics of Horse Care - Horses are amazingly beautiful and sensitive creatures. Horses require not only understanding and patience to have a horse as a pet, it also requires a whole lot of care. Herd Mentality: Observe horses in the herd system, each horse's welfare in the wild depends upon an instinctive submission to the discipline of the herd. The instinct is for immediate action. To the horse, action is survival. When horses live in an herd environment, they often take turns sleeping and standing guard for any predators. When the leader of the herd signals danger they take flight.
  • Mattress Selection - A Practical Approach - I have been using the same old bed ever since I was a teenager and it had been comfortable until 3 years ago, when my legs had finally cross the finishing line at the border of the mattress. It bothered me to feel my legs hanging in mid air when I sleep. Enough is enough. A new mattress is a must. I for one am a tall person of 183cm.
  • Derby Offers Interesting Take On Pace - With the 132nd running of the Kentucky Derby drawing near, gamblers, bookies and fans alike are trying to identify who are the pretenders and who are the contenders.
  • Some Derby Contenders Have a Distinct Advantage - For the 132nd time, 3-year-olds will take to the Churchill Downs main track for America's Race. Of more than 425 horses nominated for the 2006 Triple Crown, only 20 or fewer will run in the Kentucky Derby. Some contenders hold a noticeable advantage before they break from two gates. Others, however, must buck negative trends that go back decades. For example, no horse with four or fewer career starts has smelled the roses since Exterminator in 1918. So, it does not look good for Showing Up who won the Lexington Stakes on April 22. Since 1947, the only horse with two preps that won the Kentucky Derby was Sunny's Halo in 1983. That is a bad omen for Private Vow and Sharp Humor.
  • Greg Melikov's Horses to Watch - Edition 83 - Aqueduct Bold Man: Raced eighth early, advanced to fifth more than 5Â1/2 lengths behind after a half-mile, rallied 3 wide into stretch, made up 5Â1/2 lengths, and lost by a neck at 6 furlongs on March 30. (Tracked pace 2 lengths behind in third after a half-mile, rallied three wide on turn, losing ground, made up nearly 2Â1/2 lengths in stretch, and was nosed out at 6 furlongs on April 26.) Calder Staria: Steadied at start, checked early, raced more than 5Â1/2 lengths behind after a half-mile, rallied 4 wide in stretch, made up more than 4 lengths, and lost by a head at a mile on the turf on April 30.
  • How To Choose The Proper Hay For Your Horse - To have a strong and healthy horse it is important for you to feed them properly. Feeding them quality hay will give them the important nutrients and minerals they need. The amount of proteins needed by a horse are dependent on their metabolism, age, and rate of work. • Horse Sex and Other Outrageous Stories Become Online Megastars - Seattle Times staff columnist Danny Westneat wrote an article last year about a man that died from anal sex with a horse. This story was so outlandish that it became the all time most read article in the history of the Seattle Times. According to Danny Westneat 4 of the top 20 articles were also on this same horse sex incident, "So much so, a case can be made that the articles on horse sex are the most widely read material this paper has published in its 109-year history. " Anywhere you look on the internet outrageous and sickening stories always make up the most read, emailed and downloaded articles. Society has, as a whole, taken a very marked interest in what's different, weird, sickening, etc...

  • Arabian Horse - The Arabian horse is an animal which has lived on the Arabian Peninsula for well over 2000 years. These horses were properly bred to demonstrate many traits which were attractive, such as strength, beauty, and endurance. Many experts on horses have concluded that Arabian horses are among the oldest breeds in the world. The Bedouins were a nomadic people who are given credit for first taming the Arabian horse. The Bedouins made every effort to protect the purity of these horses, and many could trace back the lineage of the horses they owned. During this time, it was critical to have a horse which was strong, fast, and courageous.
  • American Saddlebred - The American Saddlebred is a breed of horse developed in the state of Kentucky. Today they are featured in many showring competitions, and they are also used for racing, parades, and hunting.
  • The Majestic Arabian Horse - Bedouins believed that the horse was a gift from Allah. It was to be cherished, revered, almost worshipped. The Arabian horse has been bred for centuries, with its beginnings in the oases around the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers in the countries known in our modern history as Iran, Iraq, and Syria, as well as other parts of the Arabian Peninsula. Because the Bedouins cherished their horses, the bloodlines were a jealously guarded family treasure within the different tribes. There are records which indicate that the nomads began breeding these superb horses as early as 3000 to 2500 B.C.
  • Trading Software - Profit Machines or Losers? - Thousands of people every day trade on the worlds stock markets, with the majority now using software to aid them, but does it help them make more money? This software is known as a 'bot', short for robot, but it is only ever as good as the user. If the user does not know how to trade successfully on his own in the first place then he is unlikely to get instant profit from a bot. New users have to understand that it will take weeks to learn how to use a bot correctly. I use the 'new' bots on the block on a daily basis.
  • Horses - Affirmed - In the crazy world of horse racing the one thing we had yet to see going into the 1978 horse racing year was back to back triple crown winners. That was about to all change because of a horse by the name of Affirmed. Not only had there never been back to back triple crown winners but no horse ever had to beat the same rival in all three legs of the triple crown. So 1978 was indeed special all the way around. Because during this amazing year Affirmed and Alydar gave racing fans all over the world the thrill of a lifetime. By the time the last leg of the triple crown at Belmont was run, Affirmed was a triple crown winner but it was Alydar that got everyone's sympathy and was the hero of the year.
  • Horses - Seattle Slew - In the short list of triple crown winners, this horse had to be one of the biggest bargains in racing history. We're referring to the puzzle of a wonder, Seattle Slew.
  • Horses - Sir Barton - There have been many great triple crown winners in horse racing history. But none faded farther into obscurity than the triple crown winner Sir Barton. He wasn't the last but he was the first. This was an amazing achievement for this horse when you consider the following facts. As a two year old he lost his first six races. This horse couldn't get out of his own way and nobody gave him a chance to win much of anything, let alone the triple crown. As a three year old, the only reason he was even in his first race in the 1919 Kentucky Derby, was to serve as a rabbit for his stable mate, Billy Kelly.
  • Draft (Draught) Horses - Percherons - History Although the exact origins of the Percheron have been lost over the years, there are several different beliefs about their roots. There are those who believe that this large draft horse is descended from the original horses of the Ice Age. Still others think that it's closely related to the Boulonnais horse that the Romans used to invade Brittany. And a third group maintains that the horse is from a herd of Arabians, or some of the horses used by the Moors during the battle of Poitiers.
  • Draft (Draught) Horses - Friesians and Gypsy Cobs - Friesians Brief History This draft breed is rooted in Friesland, Northwestern Europe, which is now a part of the Netherlands. The original stock was descended from the order of Equus robustus (the big horse).
  • Draft (Draught) Horses - The Clydesdale - History This heavy draft horse traces its roots to the early 19th century in the Lanarkshire (formerly Clydesdale) district of Scotland. There was a strong need for this large horse not only in the agricultural area but in the commerce area as well. The horses were used in the coalfields of Lanarkshire and for hauling wagons in the streets of Glasgow. To achieve the desired traits of a horse with a longer stride and larger feet, that were necessary on draft horses who worked on the soft soils of the Scottish lands, English and Belgian stallions were imported and bred with the smaller local mares. The result was the founding line of the modern-day Clydesdales. The breed's reputation grew to the point that Scottish breeders began exporting them to Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the United States.
  • Draft (Draught) Horses - The Belgian - History As the name implies. this breed originated in Belgium. Back in the medieval times, the center of Western Europe became well-known for the large black horses known as "Flemish". These are the horses which carried the heavily armored knights into battle. By necessity, only the largest and strongest of this breed were trained as "chargers" or "destriers". It is from this stock that other draft breeds drew for genetic material. At the heart of this area, Belgium was established as a country. Stallions of the region were exported throughout parts of Europe, as the need grew for the larger stock horses to work in the industrial and agricultural settings. Because Belgium was the resource upon which other countries relied for these large stock animals, all that remained was for the country to establish the breed and strengthen the genetic material already at hand.
